Identification of Cracks
1.a)
Type of issue : Repairable Damage
Observation: The concrete parts are fractured at the beam bottom at a Column Beam connection. No significant problems appeared to be emerging in the Column zone. It appears that the reinforcements are unharmed.
Reasoning:
It's possible that at Support, the beam's compressive stress limit was surpassed, causing it to rupture (Technically, A beam will experience Tensile stress at Support top and Compressive stress at Support bottom).Another possibility is that the structure was subjected to a lateral force, which causes a plastic hinge to form at the joint of the beam when the forces are reversed. Or perhaps an accident caused damage to the beam part. There may be a lot of reasons to see the beam damaged but the column and the reinforcemnt is intact.
Solution: Since the reinforcing bars are still in place, Further damaged concrete parts may be removed entirely any lost concrete must be patched up or grouted by treating the concrete using the same or a higher grade of concrete. The structure may be reanalyzed to meet the most recent design requirements, and the compression face of the beam's design capacity must be guaranteed.
1.b)
Type of Isuue : Damages Due to Deterioration
Observation:First of all, this structure appears to be older. The connections were fully fractured and broken at every junction where a column beam was present on both levels. It appears that the reinforcements are unharmed. One level's partition walls have damage.
Reasoning:
Because there was no evident failure or warning in the beam elements, the beams appear stronger.
Any connections where the column's capacity would not have been sufficient caused the concrete to collapse. The building is Exposed to external enviroment Since the buiding is exposed to external Environment for a long period of time the outer concrete has experienced a deterioration for a long period hence the damages. The column and beam also has experienced the same.
Solution: At first glance, it appears that this Failure cannot be corrected or repaired. Despite the availability of cutting-edge repair techniques like concrete injection, it is still advisable to first check the quality of the connections' reinforcements. If the connctions of the beam, column and the reinforcemnts are found intact then the outer concerte can be treated and packed. If not then its is irrepairable.
1.c)
Issue Type: Damages on the Beam column joint
Observations: The beams do not appear to be warning of a significant collapse (But random cracks are visible). Also showing no signs of collapse is the piece of the column visible in the photograph. The blocks are broken. At the connection, concrete parts are broken. The slab is also showing visible cracks.
Reasoning:
We may deduce that gravity loads were not the cause of the damage because they rarely cause connections between column beams to fail. The structure was exposed to high sway shear, making it vulnerable to any earthquake. The connections are prone to breaking down because of sway shear effects. It can also be caused due to an impact loat the juncture caused due to an earthqake.
Solution: By being aware of the updated design specifications, the connection can be strengthened as the column and beam are safe for continued performance.Since the cracks are hairline they can be easily packed. After treating the cracks the beams and columns will function normally without any further damage.
2.a)
Type of Issue: Irreparable Failure
Observations: No information exists to forecast beam response. Column reinforcements are somewhat twisted and partially crushed. The beam appears to have no sort of damage, The column face has less damage than the sides of the column.
Reasoning:
This is an exterior column, therefore lateral force may cause it to sway more. Additionally, the bending reinforcements point to the involvement of lateral stresses in the failure.
Solution: It is impossible to fix reinforcements that have already been twisted, broken, or rusted (tensile repair is not viable). But to meet the compressive design criterion, concrete can be patched.
2.b)
Type of Isuue: Irreparable Failure
Observations: It is obvious that the concrete was completely pulverised. However, the reinforcements are neither bent or buckled but leaving the reinforcemnts to be exposed.
Reasoning:
The Longitudinal reinforcemnts seems to be intact , Hence Flexure cannot therefore be involved in any way.Concrete that has been perfectly crushed diagonally from one edge to the other demonstrates the column's pure shear collapse.Whether the shear failure was caused by lateral load or gravity force cannot be predicted.
Solution: All of the crumbled-up concrete has been removed. Reconstructing the entire column would have an impact on the nearby frame load routes.Hence the repair would take up lot of skilled labour. If the reinforcemnt of the column remains intact then the concrete can be grouted with skilled labour and lot of precautions. If similary kind of damages are present in the nearby columns with sevearity then the column is irrepairable.
2.c)
Type of Issue : Failure Due to weak column and Strong beam
Observations: It appears that the column may be crushed during the building process itself. There are no partitions installed or the column crushed area might be a parking space where the strong column and weak beam concept is not applied. Complete concrete crushing and bending of reinforcements. We could see that its in the state of collapsing and a temprory prop is used to hold the building from collapsing for the time being.
Reasoning:
Because the reinforcements are bent, flexure should be involved in the column failure.
Nearby joint has completely disintegrated concrete. This implies that the important location of the Column had poor design and detailing. It is becasue the coulumn has not met its desired strength and has exceeded its ultimate capacity of holding thus a collapse has occured.
Solution: Repositioning the deviated reinforcements is exceedingly challenging. This eliminates any viable option for the column to be strengthened or re-functionalized.The structure has already experienced severe damage repairing it is not possible but the column area where there is a collapse can be rectified by using column strengthening methods.
