Hood design-Week 2

Hood

The hood (North American English) or bonnet (Commonwealth English excluding Canada) is the hinged cover over the engine of motor vehicles that allows access to the engine compartment, or trunk (boot in Commonwealth English) on rear-engine and some mid-engine vehicles) for maintenance and repair.

On front-engine cars, the hood may be hinged at either the front or the rear edge, or in earlier models (e.g. the Ford Model T) it may be split into two sections, one each side, each hinged along the centre line. A further variant combines the bonnet and wheel arches into one section and allows the entire front bodywork to tilt forwards around a pivot near the front of the vehicle

Design of Inner Panel

Designed according to the given dimensions and by using the thickness as 0.75.

Outer Pannel

The outer pannel is a plane heet of styling part which is hemmed together with outer pannel

Hemming

It is used for joining the inner and outer panel. It is used in place of spot welding whch reduces lots of loss.

When force is applied during hemming there may be a change of shape which is examined and relaxation is given in those areas.

Mastic and Emboss Definition

Mastic is used to join the inner and outer panel with 5mm gap.

Emboss is given so that during the crash the energy is dissipated outside / away from the passenger and along with the other cut outs to reduce the weight.

Along with reduction in weight it even doesn't cost as it is a cut out.

After embossing the required amount of material is trimmed accordingly with NX CAD tools and are given with a fillet radius by maintaining the minimum value of 3 + 0.75, so that no emboss if left out with sharp edges.

Positioning of Hinge and Striker.

Taking centre of axis of hinge as centre of the circle drawn through the striker distance as the radius. It is positioned tangent, so that perpendicular is obtained.
