Car hood report

Introduction :

Hood plays a major role in all cars or automobiles. Hood is the hinged part covers over the engine motor.

Materials used

The materials that are used to do manufacture hood is aluminium steel fiber plus or carbon fibre. However aluminium or steel are used to manufacture BIW.

Components of the hood:

• Support rod
• Latches
• Stricker
• Outer panel
• Inner panel

Design of the hood:

The outer and inner panel designed firstly, and they are assembled using hinges while manufacturing and designing these hoods pedestrian safety must be taken into account not only the best part of the car to lighter the weight. Pedestrian safety in the sense HIC values are considered. [Head injury criterion]

The inner and outer panel are attached with Mastic seal with around 80 millimetre diameter not fully on the surface.

Support rod:

Support rod is used to support the hood at open position. That is located in right side of car to avoid interferences. Whereas in left side, the battery will be assembled. In some car support rod is attached in hood and hinged in engine component. In other cars it is vice versa.

Latch Trajectory:

While assembling the latch with the hood yes it is recommended that the position of latch striker should be placed in such a way to get locked on hole in engine component. The latch striker is placed on the inner hood panel using latch trajectory path keeping hinge as radius

Embossed surface:

Embossed surface plays an important role in car hood panel. While crashing or accident of a car because during collision hood is the most affected part which sustains all the impact force while crashing. So to reduce the impact force that is directed to the driver the ‘v’ shaped or Y shaped embosses are made to divert the impact forces so that river can be escaped from the huge impact force.

Manufacturing process:

• Deep drawing
• Hemming

We cannot use spot welds or rivets to join the inner and outer panel of the car which makes the appearance of the car deceptive, so the technique like deep drawing or heming or mastic seals are used to join the 2 panels.

Conclusion

Therefore the hood of the car is designed with considering the pedestrian safety and car’s weight. the components of the hoods are designed and assembled
