FREQUENCY ANALYSIS OF ROTATING SHAFT | SOLIDWORKS SIMULATION | FEA

FREQUENCY ANALYSIS OF ROTATING SHAFT:

OBJECTIVE:

In this project, we need to perform frequency analysis on the shaft and need to generate different mode shapes, which causes

INTRODUCTION:

FEA (Finite Element Analysis): FEA is an analysis method using FEM (Finite Element Method) to solve the structural problems. The finite element method is a numerical technique for obtaining an approximate solution to a wide variety of engineering problems. The method originated in the aerospace industry as a tool to study stresses in the complex air-frame structure.

Frequency analysis is performed to find out the natural frequency and corresponding mode shapes of the component. Natural frequency is an inherent characteristic property of the component, it is given by

`ω=(√k)/(√m)`

The natural frequency is the frequency with which component will vibrate if disturbed and allowed to vibrate on its own without any external force acting on it. Mode shapes of the component give the direction in which component is vibrating at that corresponding natural frequency.

Damping effects are neglected in frequency analysis when finding the 'Natural frequency' of the component. Components will have an infinite number of natural frequencies but the lowest natural frequency is known as the fundamental frequency. Natural frequency is determined to avoid the resonance of the component. Resonance occurs when the external frequency is equal to the natural frequency, in this state resonance amplitude causes the failure of the component.

GEOMETRY OF SHAFT:

PROCEDURE:

  • Creating geometries in SolidWorks.
  • After creating the geometry, and apply the material to the 3D model.
  • Under Simulation, perform a new study for frequency analysis.
  • General steps in FEA problem:
    • PRE-PROCESSING: -
      • Defining material property. Here we have defined the material for each beam to be PLAIN CARBON STEEL.
