Challenge

Foundation Design using SAFE

Q1). 1. Model the isolated footing provided in week 11 challenge on SAFE. Analyze and design it to verify the size, depth and steel provided as per calculations.

AIM :

  • Model the isolated footing provided in week 11 challenge on SAFE. Analyze and design it to verify the size, depth and steel provided as per calculations.
  • To model the pile cap on SAFE software.

INTRODUCTION :

  • CSI SAFE (Slab Analysis by the Finite Element Method) is the best tool for designing concrete slabs and foundations.
  • SAFE provide easiness to engineer towards the safe design of structures with powerful tools like draw, analyze, design and detailing etc.
  • Laying out models is quick and efficient way with the user-friendly drawing tools, or user can import model layouts from AutoCAD or loading conditions from other software's like CSI ETABS and CSI SAP2000.

PROCEDURE :

Data Required for SAFE analysis and design :

Unfactored load = 2000/1.5 = 1333.3 KN.

Dead load break up = (Total Unfactored load)/2

=1333.3/2= 666.7 KN.

Live load break up = (Total Unfactored load)/2

=1333.3/2=666.7 KN.

Subgrade module for soil= (Safe bearing capacity x Factor to ultimate)/maximum settlement.

=150x3/0.05=k=9000 kn/m3.

Rebar Yeild strength ( Fy)=500 N/MM2.

Rebar ultimate strength (Fu)= 575 N/MM2 (SAY).

Elastic modules of M25 concrete = 25000 N/mm2.

Load Size = In that we have to enter Column Size = 400 mm

Once you enter all the details Click in Okay

  • As displacement is -12 mm which is less than 25 mm...Safe

Check for Bearing Pressure

  • For that Click On Display - Soil Pressure - Select Combination as - ULS
  • As we can see that Bearing pressure is more than SBC
  • i.e 169.22kn/m2 > 150 kN/m2.............Unsafe

  • We have to Increase the area to see if we can reduce the bearing pressure below the SBC
  • Now provide the area as 4m x 4m
  • Here we can see that after increasing the area Bearing pressure is reduced
  • i.o-143.30 150 kn/m2..

Q2). A column of size 600x600 carrying an unfactored gravity load (DL+LL) of 1175 KN is to be supported on pile cap, which ultimately transfers load to the piles underneath. Piles of 16 metres length and 500 mm diameter are to be used. Each pile has a load carrying capacity of 200 KN. Model, analyse and design the pile cap on SAFE to evaluate the following:

  • Pile group to be used
  • Depth of pile cap
  • Longitudinal steel on top and bottom face in both directions

AIM :

PROCEDURE :

Step 1)

Data Required for SAFE analysis and design :

Unfactored load = 1175 KN.

Dead load break up = (Unfactored load/2)

=1175/2= 587.5 KN.

Live load break up = (Unfactored load/2)

=1175/2=587.5 KN.

point spring of pile = A X E / L

=(196349 X 25000 ) / 16000=306796 KN/m.

K for SAFE analysis =306.8 kn/mm

Rebar Yeild strength ( Fy)=500 N/MM2.

Rebar ultimate strength (Fu)= 575 N/MM2 (SAY).

Elastic modules of M25 concrete = 25000 N/mm2.

Data Required for SAFE analysis and design :

No of piles required = unfactored load with self weight addition / individual pile capacity.

=(1175 x 1.1) / 200 =6.5

consider 8 piles for symentrical placement of piles under pile cap.

Take centre to centre distance between piles = 3 xpile diameter (1500mm)

Edge distance from pile centre = 1 x pile diameter (500mm)

Assumue pile cap depth =500mm.
