Foundation Design using SAFE
AIM: Foundation Design using SAFE
1. Model the isolated footing provided in week 11 challenge on SAFE. Analyze and design it to verify the size, depth and steel provided as per calculations.
Procedure:
Steps:
- Calculation for the footing
- Open the SAFE Application
- Select New Model > Input Settings > Units was selected as Metric SI and Code IS 456-2000 and steel design code as BS-5950.
- Then select sigle footing system and fill the all required details

- Now change the cover of slabs to 50mm

- Now add material property from define
- Add Materials M25 and HYSD 500

- Now add Section Properties > Slab sections

- Now Define area spring property and name it as SOIL1
- Aslo give the value of subgrade modulus

- Now define load combinations
- Define SLS (DL+LL) and ULS (1.5DL+1.5LL)

- Do a mesh check and set it to 0.1m

- Now run the Analysis
Results:
- Check for undeformed Shape in ULS

- Check for Punching shear (Should be less than 1)

- Checking for reinforcement - Minimum reinforcement should be 0.12% as per IS-456.

2. A column of size 600x600 carrying an unfactored gravity load (DL+LL) of 1175 KN is to be supported on pile cap, which ultimately transfers load to the piles underneath. Piles of 16 metres length and 500 mm diameter are to be used. Each pile has a load carrying capacity of 200 KN. Model, analyse and design the pile cap on SAFE to evaluate the following:
- Pile group to be used
- Depth of pile cap
- Longitudinal steel on top and bottom face in both directions
Procedure:
Steps:
- Open SAFE software and create a new model

- Create new model template

- Define the material property

- Define the Slab property

- Now Create pile of 500 mm and draw column and slab also

- Now create joints

- select the central point in column and assign the load

- Define the point spring property

- Now define load combinations

- Assign the load combination to Ultimate limit state

- Draw design Strips

- Do a mesh check and set it to 0.1m before running the analysis

- Check the model And run Analysis
Result:
1) Check for settlement

2) Check for Punching Shear

It is less than 1, hence it is ok
