Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

FENDER & WHEEL ARCH

AIM :-

To Determine the Distance between Wheel Arch and Fener Outer Atch in the European standards.

INTRODUCTION :

When the vehicle is in motion, rotating tyre tends to pick up stones and harmful particles and hurl them in all directions. A fender basically prevents any injuries to the pedestrians and contain the motion of such particles. While designing a fender, the designer emphasizes on the aesthetic appeal of the part. Whereas an engineer studies the design and concludes whether the design can be manufactured or not and also does it follow the safety regulations as provided by different organizations in different areas of the world.

EUROPEAN STANDARDS :

Wheel Arc Verification Using European Standards:-

  • The important parameter which is considered in the designing of wheel arch or wheel is the clearance between wheel and fender during the vehicle bump conditions.
  • Requirements have been proposed by vehicle and road safety community to the minimum requirement of wheel arc distance
    from the wheel for safety.
    Rules –
    1. Measure of CL L is done on sections SA, SB , SC, SD, SE.
    2. At all sections the value of CL L should be greater that 10mm.
    3. Wheel guard requirement -: The value of a shall be more that 10 mm at 30 Deg forward and 50 Deg rearward from the central axis of wheel.

PROCEDURE :

1. To create a center point of Wheel outer Arch. Draw a line 0° to 180º horizontal axis throuh center point.

2. Draw a 90° Vertical Line Perpendicular to Horizontal line.

3. To Create a Plane parallel through Wheel Center point.

4. Create a sketch in form of European standards Lines SB 30° from SA, SC 50° & SE 150mm Heghit from Horizontal Center line of wheel. SD Midle line of SC & SE in equal distance.

5. Now Calculate gap Between Wheel arch & Fender Outer Arch.

In the European standards gap range is >= 10mm required at all points

SECTION RANGE RESULT
SA 9.95 < 10.00 Fail
SB 10 = 10 Pass
SC 0.107 < 10.000 Fail
SD 2.886 < 10.000 Fail
SE 6.002 < 10.000 Fail

Conclusion:

The gap between is Wheel Arch and Fender Arch is not 10mm Greater than and the the wheel is out side of Fender only SB is the 10mm.The given fender does not qualify the European standard for wheel arc area.
