Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

TITLE: Fender Design - Wheel Arch

-

AIM:

  • To calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

-

Wheel Arch:

Wheel Arch is curvature in shape and it a part of Fender in a vehicle which houses the wheel of the car. Wheel Arch is designed in such a way that the position of the wheel should be inside the fender as well as wheel arch in order to avoid damage to fender by chipping and also to avoid damage to the pedestrian.

(Chipping is caused when sand, mud, rocks, liquids, etc., from being thrown into the air by the rotating tyre and get hit to the fender.)

-

Considerations while Designing Wheel Arch:

  • Type of Fender
  • Wheel Arch Area
  • Size of the fender
  • Clearance between Wheel arch and wheel
  • Safety regulations to be followed depending upon the region(eg: US Regulation, Indian Regulation, Japan Regulation).

-

WHEEL ARCH:

The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender. Corrosion had occurred around the splash plate at the back of the wheel arch.

-

FENDER:

Fender is the part of a car that protects and frames its wheels and keeps mud from splashing it. Most modern vehicles have fenders on their front wheels. It is the part of a car, truck or motorcycle that surrounds the wheel sell. The primary function of a fender is to prevent dirt and debris from being thrown into the air by the tire. The fender is located over the wheels of the vehicle. As such, there are four fenders on a typical vehicle: front right, front lef t, rear right and rear left.

  1. FULL FENDER TYPE: Full fender type is traditional type of fender where more material consumption is observed. This type is used in old design of automobiles where it increases the overall weight and thus reduces performance. The maintenance also relatively more due to more surf
  2. HALF FENDER TYPE: Half fender type is modern design where less material consumption is observed,so productivity increases by reducing size of blank and thus providing more The maintenance also relatively low compared to full bumper type.

-

JAPAN REQUIREMENTS FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC:

  1. Measure clearance L of tire, hub, cap, and fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
  2. Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions.
  3. Wheel guard requirement: the value a shall be more than 5mm at a line 30*forward and 50*rearward from the centralvertical axis of axis of wheel

-

US STANDARDS REGULATION FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC:

  1. Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* and make the clearance check table.
  2. All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulatio
  3. The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50*rearward from the centralvertical axis of axis of whee

-

EUROPEAN  REGULATION:

Measure CL L at section SA-SA-SB-SB-SC-SC-SD-SD-SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.

  1. At all five sections the CL L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regul
  2. Wheel guard requirement: the value of a· shall be more than 5mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree backward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

 -

 PROCEDURE:

  • According to the European standards, the design fender and wheel arch should pass the wheel guard requirement.
  • Then create a plane with origin as center of the wheel plane.
  • Then sketch using lines along with given dimensions as SA,SB,SC,SD and SE.
  • After sketching project the intersection points on to the fender
  • Then use measure distance tool and calculate the clearance between sketch lines and wheelarch.

-

Conclusion:

From the results acquired, the fender does not pass the European regulations, as the minimum clearance between the fender wheel arch and wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is 10mm and this design does not meet the requirement.
