Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Fender Wheel Arch Regulation

Fender Wheel Arch Regulation of Different Regions:

  1. Japan Regulation : According to Japan regulations the distance or length between the fender and the tyre should be more than 5mm.

To calculate this distance first we draw lines from the centre of the tyre and then from the centre point we draw 2 lines, one is at 30 degrees forward and another is 50 degrees rearward as shown in figure below. Then we project these lines on the fender and measure the value of L at three different regions such that A, B, and C.

If the values at all three regions are greater than 5mm then the fender wheel arc will get approved and if the values did not meet the requirement, then the design will get rejected.

  1. USA regulations: According to USA regulations the distance or length between the fender and the tyre should be more than 5mm.

To calculate this distance first we draw lines from the centre of the tyre. And then from the centre point we draw the angles from -20 degrees to 180 degrees as shown in the figure below and then we mark the points at every 10 degrees. Then we project these lines on the fender and measure the value of L at all the regions and measure that the distance at every point is greater than 5mm.

If the values at all three regions are greater than 5mm then the fender wheel arc will get approved and if the values did not meet the requirement, then the design will get rejected.

  1. European regulations: According to European regulations the distance or length between the fender and the tyre should be more than 10 mm.

To calculate this distance first we draw lines from the centre of the tyre. And then from the centre point we draw the angle line from 0 degrees to 180 degrees as shown in the figure below and then we mark the points 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees rearward and additionally 150mm above 0 degrees we mark a point and project the line and then we take the angle bisector of the two lines that is the 50 degrees rearward line and the line drawn 150mm above from the 0 degrees. Then we project these lines on the fender and measure the value of L at all the regions and measure that the distance at every point is greater than 10mm.

If the values at all three regions are greater than 10mm then the fender wheel arc will get approved and if the values did not meet the requirement, then the design will get rejected.

Objective - Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

According to European standards the length should be 10mm or more and to calculate this distance first we will draw a sketch in which we will draw the lines at different angles as shown below:

Now we will measure the value of L at different regions like SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE and then we will make a conclusion if the fender wheel arc will pass the European standard or not.

1. Measuring value of L at SA

So the value for L at SA is 10mm.

2. Measuring value of L at SB

The value of L at SB is 9.94mm

3. Measuring value of L at SC

Value of L at SC is .11mm

4. Measuring value of L at SD

Value of L at SD is 2.86mm.

5. Measuring value of at SE

Value of L at SD is 5.9751mm.

Table: Clearance value of L at different points

Conclusion: The given fender does not pass the European standards for fender wheel arc area at SA, SC, SD, and SE sections.
