Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Fender Wheel Arc :

Wheel Arc is semi circular area above the wheel. While car is moving there is tendency of stone, mud etc comes under the face of tyre. Due to this there is tendency of wheel/tyre to splash water, mud and chipping stones outside / inside of the vehicle. Wheel arc is play an important role to the saftey of the under side of wheel, Pedestrian on the road and other vehicles from hitting stones and splashing of mud /water.

We have to position the tyre inside of the fender beacuse there are more chances of chipping while wheel is ouside of the fender.

Fender Wheel Arc Regulation :

There are pre-defined Regulation/standrads globally, these standrad changes region to region according to their road condition. According to the region we need to follow regulation.

1. EU regulation: The clearance value Should be more than the 10 mm at 30 degree at forward and 50 degree at backward and the point form 150 mm upside from the central horizontal axis and also for the wheel gaurd reqmt it should be more than 5 mm at 30 degree at forward and 50 degree backward from the central vertical axis.

2. Japan Regulation: The clearance value Should be more than the 5mm at 30 degree at forward and 50 degree at backward and also for the wheel gaurd reqmt it should be more than 5 mm at 30 degree at forward and 50 degree backward from the central vertical axis.

3. US Regulation: The clearance value Should be more than the 5 mm at every 10 degrees from -20 degree to 180 degree.and also for the wheel gaurd reqmt it should be more than 5 mm at 30 degree at forward and 50 degree backward from the central vertical axis.

Wheel Arc Regulation calcultion According to EU satndrad:

SA, SB, SC, SD and SE section are plotted using the angles and dimensions given the EU standard. Now the clearance is to be checked and the gap should be more than 10mm from the outer part of fender to the outer most part of the wheel, if it is equal to or more than 10mm then it meets the safety requirement and also wheel gaurd reqmt gap should be more than 5 mm between 30 degrres to 50 degrees.

1. Section SA:

Below figure shows that at Section SA clearance is less than 10 mm (i.e 9.9490 mm) and doesn't fulfill the EU std requirement.

Below figure shows that at Section SA wheel gaurd rqmt is greater than 5 mm and fulfill the EU std requirement.

2. Section SB:

Below figure shows that at Section SB clearance is equals to 10 mm and fulfill the EU std requirement.

Below figure shows that at Section SB wheel gaurd rqmt is greater than 5 mm and fulfill the EU std requirement.

3. Section SC:

Below figure shows that at Section SC clearance is less than 10 mm (i.e 0.113949 mm) and doesn't fulfill the EU std requirement.

Below figure shows that at Section SC wheel gaurd rqmt is greater than 5 mm and fulfill the EU std requirement.

4. Section SD:

Below figure shows that at Section SD clearance is less than 10 mm (i.e 2.8875mm)and doesn't fulfill the EU std requirement.

5. Section SE:

Below figure shows that at Section SE clearance is less than 10 mm (i.e 5.9973 mm) and doesn't fulfill the EU std requirement.

Conclusion: From the above calculation we can say that fender wouldn’t pass the EU standard.
