Fender Design

FENDER

Fender is the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body which covers the wheel. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

Fenders also give an aesthetic to the vehicle and also responsible for he aerodynamics of the vehicle.

Types of Fender

  1. Full Bumper

  1. Half Bumper

Mounts on Fender

  1. A Pillar-it is a structural member which integrate the body with the roof. Fenders are fastened to the A-pillar to form a robust structure.

2.Bumper-The bumper mounting is used to fix the plastic bumper to the fender.

3.Sill- this panel is under the door supporting the floor. The bottom end of the fender is mounted on the sill

4.Drip Area- It is an important mounting of the fender. It is assembled with the engine compartment and there are design constraints which have to take in consideration while designing the drip area mountings, like from the front side of vehicle we need to start drip mountings design after leaving the space of 150 mm and for cowl also we need to leave space of 200-300 mm from the other end of fender (A-pillar mounting)

5.Baffle- These mountings are plastic locking clips mounted on inner side of fender.

Manufacturing Process:

  1. Forming: - Forming is the process by which a component gets its shape by apply compression, tension or shear force up to its plastic deformation
  2. Bending: - Bending is the process which forms V shapes, U shape bending against a straight axis.
  3. Piercing: - it is a shearing process in which raw metal is punched with a tool, and creates a hole of desired shape.
