Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Fender Wheel Arch Challenge

Objective:

  • The main objective of the challenge is to calculate the Wheel Arch area and check whether the car passes the European standard.

Fender Wheel Arch:

  • It is semi circular part positioned above the wheel of the car.
  • It acts as a shield for wheel and protects passengers as well as the pedestrians from projection of water, stone and mud.
  • There should be sufficient clearance between the wheel and fender wheel arch
  • If there is not a sufficient clearance then it will cause more chipping so it will harm both pedestrians and car.

Standards Follwed by the Automobile Industry:

1.Japanese Standard:

  • Measure clearance L of tire, hub, cap, and fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
  • Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions.
  • Wheel guard requirement: the value a shall be more than 5mm at a line 30*forward and 50*rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

2.US Standard:

  • Clearance ‘L’ is to be checked at all positions from -100° to 100° and create clearance check chart to validate
  • The value of L should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations
  • Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel

3.European Standard:

  • A Datum plane is created at the outermost part of the wheel.
  • A Horizontal line is drawn from the center of axis of the wheel.
  •  A Vertical Line is drawn from the center point and named SA
  • Then Two lines SB and SC created at 30° from left and 50° Right from the vertical line SA respectively.
  • Then a point from 150 mm from the horizontal line is taken and line SE is drawn.
  • Using derived line command a center point between SC and SE lines taken and SD line is drawn.
  • Measure the clearance L at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE .
  • At all the sections L value should be greater than 10mm to pass the european regulations.
  • The value 'a' should be more than 5mm from the line 30° and 50° from the wheel center of axis.

  • The clearance between SA Line and wheel arc is 9.9531mm

  • The clearance Between SB line and wheel arc is 10mm .

  • The clearance Between SC and wheel arc is 0.114986mm.

  • The Clearance between SD and wheel arc is 2.8482mm.

  • The Clearance between SE and wheel arc is 5.9018 mm

Measuring Value 'a' for Wheel Guard Requirment:

  • Clearance 'a' at 30deg line is 48.6195.

  • The clearance 'a' at 50deg line SC line is 43.3634.

 Conclusion:

Section               L (mm)               Result                  a (mm)             Result
          SA-SA             9.95             Fail              48.6           Pass
          SB-SB              10             Pass
          SC-SC             0.11             Fail              43.3           pass
          SD-SD             2.84             Fail
          SE-SE             5.90             Fail
  •  Thus the above fender does not pass the European Regulations
