Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
AIM :
To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points of the give module and check whether the module passes the European standard or not.
WHEEL ARCH & ITS STANDARDS :
It is the shaped part of a car body that allows the wheels to be accessed. In simpler term it is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. [ FIG.1 ] If the wheel arch gap have some standards ( region to region it differs ) while designing the wheel arch we should maintain certain std.If std is not maintained means the particular govt will not approve our car in the market why because this will lead to causes a lot of injuries to the pedestrian & some times damage the car body also. The clearance value differ from region to region, according to the road condition. Followings are some standards that are followed by automobile industries.

FIG.1.WHEEL ARCH OF HONDA CITY
JAPANESE STANDARDS :
- In japanese std we have to measure the clearence between arch & wheel at three different posititon.
- Clearance should be greater than 5 mm in all three position (The positions are shown in FIG.2).

FIG.2.JAPANESE STANDARD
EUROPEAN STANDARD :
- In European std we have to measure the clearence between arch & wheel at five different posititon.
- At all five sections the clearance value should be greater than 10 mm (The positions are shown in FIG.3).

FIG.3.EUROPEAN STANDARD
USA STANDARD :
- In USA std we have check it for every 10 degrees from -20 to 0.
- All sections should have min clearance of 5mm (FIG.4)

FIG.4.USA STANDARD
WHEEL ARCH CALCULATION :
It is based on European standards as per the instruction in the challenge to be followed. The sketch is drawn on the wheel face and projected on the wheel arch at section A,B,C,D and E then the clearance value at these section is measured (FIG.5).

FIG.5
AT SECTION A :
CLEARANCE VALUE = 10mm

AT SECTION B :
CLEARANCE VALUE = 9.95mm

AT SECTION C :
CLEARANCE VALUE = -0.11mm

AT SECTION D :
CLEARANCE VALUE = -2.89mm

AT SECTION E :
CLEARANCE VALUE = -5.99mm

CLEARANCE CHECK CHART :
| S.NO | SECTION | CLEARANCE (mm) | TEST RESULT |
| 1 | A | 10 | PASS |
| 2 | B | 9.95 | PASS |
| 3 | C | -0.11 | FAIL |
| 4 | D | -2.89 | FAIL |
| 5 | E | -5.99 | FAIL |
Note: - The negative sign is used because the curvature of the fender-wheel arch is going down from the wheel surface

Conclusion:
The given model is analysed according to the European Standards and from the above table it is clear that the fender does not pass the European standards.Suggestion given to styling team to change the curvature of the wheel arch as per the euro std.
