Fender Design

FENDER:

A fender is a part of an automobile that frames a wheel well (Fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road sprays from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. The fender's openings for the wheel wells tend to be much larger than the diameter of the tire because they do not move with the tire suspension and consequently must be large enough to allow the full range of tire motion on the suspension without touching the interior of the wheel well.

TYPES:

Full front fender:

If the fender covers the tire, the wheel well surrounding the tire, and it is not directly visible from above the car body. It increases the weight and scrap of the component.

Half front fender:

It reduces the weight and scrap. It creates only half of what the full front fender does and the other part is created with the bumper part.

MOUNTING POINTS ON A FENDER :

  • Drip Area
  • Bumper Mounting
  • Sill mounting
  • A-Pillar Mounting
  • Splash/Baffle Mounting

MANUFACTURING OF FENDER :

  • Process planning
  • Blank size calculation.
  • Trimming
  • Restriking
  • Piercing
  • Burying

DESIGNING OF FENDER USING UGNX :

DRIP AREA :

  • Drip area is the one of important mounting point of the fender because it is going to mate with engine room the whole fender weight is going to lying on drip area only.
  • As per the master section 150mm from front of the fender to drip area & 200mm from the A pillar mounting area to the drip area is maintained
  • I have used the pythagoras theorem to find out the triangle value & completed the design of drip area.
  • Embosses are give in the mounting area to strengthen the part locally.
  • One dart is added in the center portion of drip area to reduce the spring back effect.

COMMANDS USED : CURVE ON SURFACE , TRIM SHEET , LAW EXTENSION , EDGE BLEND WITH 3 FACE, PROJECT CURVE , DARTS ETC...

A PILLAR MOUNTING AREA:

  • This is mounting portion going to mount on A PILLAR of the vehicle.
  • Emoboss is given in mounting area of the fender to strengthen it with a flat surface

COMMANDS USED : CURVE ON SURFACE , TRIM SHEET , LAW EXTENSION , EDGE BLEND , PROJECT CURVE ETC...

BUMPER MOUNTING AREA :

  • In this mounting portion front bumper going to mount.
  • Emoboss is given in mounting area of the fender to strengthen it with a flat surface
  • The edges are smoothened for easy manufacturing.

COMMANDS USED : CURVE ON SURFACE , TRIM SHEET , LAW EXTENSION , EDGE BLEND , PROJECT CURVE ETC...

SILL MOUNTING :

  • This portion is going to mount on the sill of the vehicle technically running board.
  • Here also we have provided emboss to strengthen it locally.
  • Flat surface is maintained in bolting area.

COMMANDS USED : CURVE ON SURFACE , TRIM SHEET , LAW EXTENSION , EDGE BLEND , PROJECT CURVE ETC...

BAFFLE MOUNTING :

  • Baffle mounting are clip type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the tyre.
  • It protect the car engine components and pedestrians from causing injuries.
  • Baffles are mounted on the fender using a special type of locking clip which are made up of plastics.

COMMANDS USED : CURVE ON SURFACE , TRIM SHEET ETC...

CONCLUSION :

Based on std & given master section designing of fender is completed i have attached the part file & stp file FYR.
