Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Wheel Arch Approval of Car front Fender using European Standards
Wheel Arch
Wheel arch is basically a arch shaped cutout on a fender that allows the placement of a wheel.
The wheel Arch has certain design constrains, the wheel must always be placed at some distance underneeth the the arch for the pedestrian safety.
The regulations particular standards on the design of wheel arch will vary in each nation based upon national regulations.
European Standards

Provided design

Wheel Arch area for the provided design is as follows

Now lets check the 'L''s & 'a''s at SA,SB,SC,SD,SE for the provided design
'L' is the clearance of the wheel from the wheel arch area inside the fender.

| Section | L | pass/fail |
| SA | 9.9489mm | <10mm - fail |
| SB | 10.00mm | =10mm - pass |
| SC | -0.11367mm | <10mm - fail |
| SD | -2.9987mm | <10mm - fail |
| SE | -5.9755mm | <10mm - fail |
At SC,SD,SE the clearance is in the opposite side which is unacceptable according to any guidelines.
As required clearance L≥10, The fender fails to pass the european standard test.
Visual Conformation

The deflection at the end of the wheel arch visually conforms that the wheel comes out of the fender arch, it causes harm to the pedestrains so the clearance has been declined for the provided design.
'a' is the clearance of the wheel at SB, SC that should have a minimum clearance of 5mm

As shown above SB,SC> 5mm (passes the test for clearance a)
As the Fender fails to have a clearance L≥10 at SC,SD,SE sections it failes to get approval according to european standards.
