Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER WHEEL ARCH CALUCLATION
Aim:
To decide wether the design is whether the european standards or not.
WHEEL ARCH:
The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender. Corrosion had occurred around the splash plate at the back of the wheel arch.
FENDER :
Fender is the part of a car that protects and frames its wheels and keeps mud from splashing it. Most modern vehicles have fenders on their front wheels. It is the part of a car, truck or motorcycle that surrounds the wheel sell. The primary function of a fender is to prevent dirt and debris from being thrown into the air by the tire. The fender is located over the wheels of the vehicle. As such,there are four fenders on a typical vehicle: front right,front lef t, rear right and rear left.
There are two types of FENDERS
- Full Bumper Type
- Half bumper Type
- FULL BUMPER TYPE FENDER: Full Bumper type Fender is traditional type of fender where more material consumption is observed. This type is used in old design of automobiles where it increases the overall weight and thus reduces performance. The maintenance also relatively more due to more surf.
- HALF BUMPER YPE FENDER: Half Bumper type Fender is modern design where less material consumption is observed,so productivity increases by reducing size of blank and thus providing more The maintenance also relatively low compared to full bumper type.
JAPAN REQUIREMENTS FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC:

- Measure clearance L of tire,hub,cap,and fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
- Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions.
- Wheel guard requirement: the value a shall be more than 5mm at a line 30*forward and 50*rearward from the centralvertical axis of axis of wheel
US STANDARDS REGULATION FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC:

- Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* and make the clearance check table.
- All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulatio
- The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50*rearward from the centralvertical axis of axis of whee
EUROPEAN REGULATION:

Measure CL L at section SA-SA-SB-SB-SC-SC-SD-SD-SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.
- At all five sections the CL L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regul
- Wheel guard requirement: the value of a·shall be more than 5mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central verticalaxis of axis of wheel.
Calculation of wheel arch area according to European Regulations
For calculation of clearance between Wheel Arch and Wheel we have to create a sketch on the outer most face of the wheel. The procedure of which is given below.
- A Datum Plane is created at the outermost face of the wheel
- The sketch is created on the new Datum Plane
- A Horizontal line is drawn across the centre of the wheel
- A perpendicular line SA is dropped at the centre of the wheel
- Two lines SB and SC are created at 30° forward of SA and 50° rearward of SA respectively
- A point is created 150mm vertically above the centre line
- A line SE is drawn from the wheel centre and passes from the point created
- Another line SD is drawn from the centre of the wheel and in the middle of lines SC and SE
SKECH

Obtaining the clearance L at the designated 5 points
The clearance distance 'L' is calculated at points SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE, which should be greater than or equal to 10mm
Clearance 'L' at SA

L = 9.9490mm
Clearance 'L' at SB

L = 10.0000mm
Clearance 'L' at SC

L = 0.1139mm
Clearance 'L' at SD

L = 2.8875mm
Clearance 'L' at SE

L = 5.9973mm
RESULTS:
| Section | Required Clearence | Actual Clearence | Pass / Fail |
| SA | +10.00mm | +9.9490mm | Fail |
| SB | +10.00mm | +10.000mm | Pass |
| SC | +10.00mm | -0.1139mm | Fail |
| SD | +10.00mm | -2.8875mm | Fail |
| SE | +10.00mm | -5.9973mm | Fail |
CONCLUSION:
From the above results we can conclude that the fender does not pass the European regulations, as the minimum clearance L between the fender wheel arch and wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is 10mm and this design does not meet the requirement.
