Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

WHEEL ARCH -

The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender. Corrosion had occurred around the splash plate at the back of the wheel arch.

FENDER -

Fender is the part of a car that protects and frames its wheels and keeps mud from splashing it. Most modern vehicles have fenders on their front wheels. It is the part of a car, truck or motorcycle that surrounds the wheel sell. The primary function of a fender is to prevent dirt and debris from being thrown into the air by the tire. The fender is located over the wheels of the vehicle. As such, there are four fenders on a typical vehicle: front right, front lef t, rear right and rear left.

TYPES OF FENDERS -

1. FULL BUMPER TYPE -

Full bumper type is traditional type of fender where more material consumption is observed. This type is used in old design of automobiles where it increases the overall weight and thus reduces performance. The maintenance also relatively more due to more surf.

2. HALF BUMPER TYPE -

Half bumper type is modern design where less material consumption is observed,so productivity increases by reducing size of blank and thus providing more The maintenance also relatively low compared to full bumper type.

JAPAN REQUIREMENTS FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC:

  1. Measure clearance L of tire, hub, cap, and fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
  2. Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions.
  3. Wheel guard requirement: the value a shall be more than 5mm at a line 30*forward and 50*rearward from the centralvertical axis of axis of wheel

US STANDARDS REGULATION FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC:

  1. Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* and make the clearance check table.
  2. All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulatio
  3. The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50*rearward from the centralvertical axis of axis of whee

EUROPEAN REGULATION FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC:

Measure CL L at section SA-SA-SB-SB-SC-SC-SD-SD-SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.

  1. At all five sections the CL L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regulations.
  2. Wheel guard requirement: the value of a·shall be more than 5mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central verticalaxis of axis of wheel.

PROCEDURE:

  1. According to the European standards, the design fender and wheelarc should pass the wheel guard requirement procced.
  2. To start the test, first create a plane with origin as center of the wheel plane.
  3. Then sketch using lines along with given dimensions as SA,SB,SC,SD and SE.
  4. After sketching project the intersection points on to the fender
  5. Then use measure distance tool and calculate the clearance between sketch lines and wheelarc.

A) Obtaining the values of clearance "L" -

a) Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SB:

The value of "L" at SB=10.00mm

b) Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SA

The value of "L" at SA=9.949mm

c) Measuring "L" cor the given wheel and fender at SC:

The value of "L" at SC=0.114mm

d) Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SD:

The value of "L" at SD=4.567mm

e) Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SE:

The values of "L" at SE=9.819mm

TABLE A : Clearence "L" obtained at sections SA,SB,SC,SD and SE

SECTION REQUIRED CLEARANCE ACTUAL CLEARANCE RESULTS
SA 10mm 9.949 mm FAIL
SB 10mm 10mm PASS
SC 10mm 0.114mm FAIL
SD 10mm 4.567mm FAIL
SE 10mm 9.189mm FAIL

B) Obtaining the values of cleareance "a" for wheel Guard Requirements -

a) Finding the values of "a" at line 30 deg forward from center vertical axis of the wheel.

The value of "a" at line 30 deg forward from center vertical axis of the wheel =48.639mm

b) Finding the value of "a" at line 50 deg rearward from centre vertical axis of the wheel.

The value of "a" at line 50 deg rearward from centre vertical axis of the wheel=43.357mm

TABLE B : Clearence "a" obtained at section SB (AT 30 deg forward from centre axis),SC(at 50 deg rearward from centre axis)

SECTION ANGLE(DEG) CLEARANCE RESULTS
SB 30 48.639>5mm PASS
SC 50 43.357>5mm PASS

CONCLUSION -

From the above results obtained, we can conclude that the given fender doesn't pass the European Standards for Wheel Arch Area.
