Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Fender Design Wheel Arch

Aim

To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

FENDER

  • Fender is the part of a car that protects and frames its wheels and keeps mud from splashing it. Most modern vehicles have fenders on their front wheels. It is the part of a car, truck or motorcycle that surrounds the wheel sell.
  • The primary function of a fender is to prevent dirt and debris from being thrown into the air by the tire. The fender is located over the wheels of the vehicle. As such, there are four fenders on a typical vehicle: front right, front lef t, rear right and rear left.

Types of Fenders

1) Full fender type

Full fender typeis traditional type of fender where more material consumption is observed. This type is used in old design of automobiles where it increases the overall weight and thus reduces performance.

2) Half fender type

Half fender type is modern design where less material consumption is observed,so productivity increases by reducing size of blank and thus providing more The maintenance also relatively low compared to full bumper type.

WHEEL ARCH

The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender. Corrosion had occurred around the splash plate at the back of the wheel arch.

The different types of fender regulations are,

1) JAPAN REGULATION FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC

  • Measure clearance L of tire, hub, cap, and fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
  • Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all the three positions.
  • Wheel guard requirement: the value a shall be more than 5mm at a line 30*forward and 50*rearward from the centralvertical axis of axis of wheel.

2) US STANDARDS REGULATION FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC

  • Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* and make the clearance check table.
  • All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulation.
  • The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50*rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

3) EUROPEAN REGULATION FOR FENDER WHEEL ARC

  • Measure CL L at section SA-SA-SB-SB-SC-SC-SD-SD-SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.
  • At all five sections the CL L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regulation.
  • Wheel guard requirement: the value of a·shall be more than 5mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central verticalaxis of axis of wheel.

PROCEDURE

  • According to the European standards, the design fender and wheelarc should pass the wheel guard requirement procedure.
  • To start the test, first create a plane with origin as center of the wheel plane.
  • Then sketch using lines along with given dimensions as SA,SB,SC,SD and SE.
  • After sketching proj ect the intersection points on to the fender.
  • Then use measure distance tool and calculate the clearance between sketch lines and wheel arc.

1) The clearance SA line and wheel arc is 9.9489 mm . So the clearance result is negative.

2) The clearance SB line and wheel arc is 10 mm . So the clearance result is positive.

3) The clearance SC line and wheel arc is 0.113670 mm . So the clearance result is negative.

4) The clearance SD line and wheel arc is 2.9006 mm . So the clearance result is negative.

5) The clearance SE line and wheel arc is 5.9755 mm . So the clearance result is negative.

Result based on European Regulation is

Region Required clearance Actual clearance Results
SA 10 mm 9.9489 mm Fail
SB 10 mm 10 mm Pass
SC 10 mm 0.11367 mm Fail
SD 10 mm 2.9006 mm Fail
SE 10 mm 5.9755 mm Fail

Conclusion

From the above results we can conclude that the fender does not pass the European regulations,as the minimum clearance L between the fender wheel arch and wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is lO mm but this design does not meet the requirement.
