Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER DESIGN - WHEEL ARCH CHALLANGE
INTRODUCTION
Wheel arch is a part that covers the external section of the wheels. Its pourpose is to ensure pedestrian safety, to give an asthetic beauty to the vehicle and to protect the engine and other parts from debris that is projected by the wheels.
OBJECTIVE
To calculate the wheel arc area and prove whether the car will pass the Europian standards or not.
EUROPIAN STANDARDS

The clearance "L" as shown in the figure at all the five section SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD & SE-SE should be greater than 10mm. The value "a" is the Wheel Guard Requirement should be greater than 5mm at a line 30 deg forward and 50 deg backward from the centre vertical axis of the wheel.
FINDING THE CLERANCES FROM GIVEN MODEL
The software that i am going to use to get the clearance values is NX 10.
The line sketches that represent the 30 deg, 50deg, the 150mm vertical point that is intersecting the fender arc and the mid point between the 50 deg and the 150mm vertical points is sketched on to the wheel face as per the Europian Standards.

- "L" value at SA = 9.949 mm

- "L" value at SB = 10.00 mm

- "L" value at SC = 0.113 mm

- "L" value at SD = 2.887 mm

- "L" value at SE = 5.997 mm

TABLE: Clearance 'L' obtained at sections SA, SB, SC, SD, SE
| SECTION | CLEARANCE "L" (in mm) | REQUIREMENT PASS/FAIL |
| SA | 10=10 | PASS |
| SB | 9.949<10 | FAIL |
| SC | -0.113<10 | FAIL |
| SD | -2.887<10 | FAIL |
| SE | -5.997<10 | FAIL |
- "a" value at SB = 43.641 mm
- "a" value at SC = 38.359 mm

TABLE: Clearance 'a' obtained at sections SB, SC
| SECTION | CLEARANCE "a"(in mm) | REQUIREMENT PASS/FAIL |
| SB | 43.641>5 | PASS |
| SC | 38.359>5 | PASS |
WHEEL ARCH AREA
The wheel arch area = 24434.76

CONCLUSION
The clearance values obtained using the help of NX software has concluded that the given fender does not meet the European Standards for Wheel Arch Area (one or more sections have clearance less than 10mm). The part should be redesigned to satisfy the standards.
