Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER DESIGN-WHEEL ARCH
Fender wheel arch is the semi-circular edge of the fender which houses wheel well.The fender wheel arch panel are typically made of sheet metal,but are some times made of fiber glass or fiber-reinforced plastic.The wheel arch gives access to the wheel and other components attached to it.Also it allows the tilting of wheels while steering to both sides without causing any interference between wheel and body.The wheel arch is designed in such a way that it allows any possible kind of motion that the wheel can have and to prevent any materials that could fly out from the wheel during the motion.Fender wheel arch design different regulations are,
- European regulation standard,
- Japan regulation standard,
- US regulation standards.
JAPAN REGULATION STANDARD
The clearance L is more than 5mm should be following in japan regulation and standard. Take an angle of 30 degree,50 degree and 90 degree and from the centre of the wheel and create vertical line B,A and C as shown below.L value has been measured between point of B,A,C and edge boundary of fender wheel arch.
US REGULATION STANDARD
The section that we going to measure L will be divided from -10 degree to 190 degree from the centre of wheel like as shown in figure.The clearance L is more than 5mm should be following in US regulation and standard.
EUROPEAN REGULATION STANDARD
The clearance L will be more than 10mm at the section of SB,SA,SC,SD,SE.The section SA will be 90 degree from the centre of the wheel.The section SB will be 30 degree from the line SA.The section SC will be 50 degree from the line SA.The section SE will be 150mm from the horizontal from the point of centre.The section SD will be the distance between SC and SE.

SECTION SA
The clearance value L at section SA is 9.9489mm
SECTION SB
The clearance value L at section SB is 10mm
SECTION SC
The clearance value L at section SC is 0.1136mm
SECTION SD
The clearance value L at section SD is 3.0777mm
SECTION SE
The clearance value L at section SE is 5.9745mm

CONCLUSION
All the measuring values are calculated as per the European regulation and standard on all the five sections. Only the section SB has satisfied with standard.Other than SB is not satisfied.So the European regulation and standard for current fender is not satisfied.Hence the fender surface have to change the dimension at the unsatisfied sections.
