Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Introduction:
- The wheel arch is an cavity which is shaped in arch and houses a wheel. the importants of arch is to serves the safety of pedestrians and other vechical to protect the car from the sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface.
- while driving in rough roads or a muddy surfaces small objects, such as stones, can become momentary stuck in the t grooves of the tire rolls over the ground.
- These materials can be throwen out from the surface of the tire at high speed.
- For a vehicle moving forward, the tire is rotating can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

Fender Wheel Arch Regulation |
there are three types of arch regulations are followed by automobile industries around the world.
- Japan standard
- European standard and
- American standard
Japan standard:

measure clearance 'L' of leaf hub cap and fender in three different positions in (A,B,C) with area 'k'
clearence must be greater than 5mm in all three positions. at line 30 forward and 50 rearwards from the central vertical axis to the axis of the wheel.
European standard:

is same standed specifications but when you see the car from the front if your wheel is outside finder is makes more chipping and it causes more damage to the pedustrine and also to the car.
this is same has japan regulations but after adding 30 degree(SB) and 50 degrees (SC)line addition 150mm line(SE) from the wheel ctr 'o' and mark the line in between that 150 degree(SE) line and 50 degree line(SC) and mark the center(midpoint) (SD).
at all three projected sections the 'L' value should be greater then 10mm to satisfy the European regulations.
American standard:

according to 'US' on all positions from -10 degree to 100 degrees and all the projected values of 'L' should be greater then 5mm to satisfy the regulation.
the value should be more then 5mm at line 30 degree and 50 degrees reward from the center axis of axial wheel.
Results:

- The clearance value 'L' was measured and found to be as follows:
| SEACTION | REQUIRED | MEASURED | RESULT |
| SB | 10 | 10 | PASS |
| SA | 10 | 9.9490 | FAIL |
| SC | 10 | 0.1139 | FAIL |
| SD | 10 | -2.8875 | FAIL |
| SE | 10 | -5.9973 | FAIL |
-
From the above observations the positions SA SC SD SE are less than 10mm which is necessary to pass the European standards. Hence, the frontfender wheel arch does not pass the European standard.
- VALUE of 'L' SHOULD NOT BE IN NEGATIVE
CONCLUSION:
THE DESIGN OF WHEEL ARCH SHOULD BE CHANGED SO THAT THE VALUE AT THE POINTS SA,SC,SD,SE. EQUAL OR GREATER THEN 10MM
