Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
CALCULATING THE FENDER WHEEL ARCH TO STUDY WHETHER THE CAR WILL PASS THE STANDARDS OR NOT:
OBJECTIVE:-
The objective of the project is to measure the wheel are areas of the front fender of a car by using the model provided by the styling team area. The wheel art must be calculated by following the European standard regulations and the necessary feedback must be provided to the styling team for further development.
INTRODUCTION:-
The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender. The car has big high-definition headlights that extend to the wheel arch. The wheel arch standard differs from region to region, to minimize the productivity time the maximum deviation values will be fixed which satisfies every region. To avoid chipping of mud and stones like particles inside the engine compartment and helps in preventing the particles thrown towards the pedestrians so as to ensure their safety (At Chipping Criteria).

WHEEL ARC AREA STANDARDS:-
There are three types of wheel arc regulations followed which almost covers the entire region all over the world as per the conditions of the road construction in their respective regions.
- European regulations
- Japan regulations
- US regulations
EUROPEAN REGULATIONS:-
The value of L' must be more than 10mm. The point SA will be at exactly 90 degrees and the point SB will be at 30 degrees anti-clockwise and the point SC will be 50 degrees clockwise. The point SE will coincide with the line 150mm above the x-axis and the mid-point of SC and SE between 50 degrees and the line above 150mm will be the SD.

JAPAN REGULATIONS:-
For japan's standard, the line at 30 degrees anticlockwise to the 90-degree axis line and the line at 50 degrees clockwise to the 90-degree line was used and the points A, B, and C will be used to measure the 'L' from the outermost edge of the fender.

US REGULATIONS:-
For US regulation the 'a' value must be greater than 5mm. The clearance table must be checked from 100 degrees to -100 degrees on all positions.

CALCULATING THE WHEEL ARC AREA:-
By using the European regulation the wheel arc area for the given styling surface will be calculated as below,
- First, the lines will be drawn as per the requirements of the European standard and the outermost edge of the fender arc and then the outermost face of the wheel must be measured.
- The projected points will be named SA, SB, SC, SD, SE and then the values must be measured.
- As per the European standard, the value of 'L' must be greater than or equal to 10.
- A value lesser than 10mm will result in the failure of design.
- By using this study the styling team will get some suggestions that will help them to come up with a successful design with the necessary requirements,
'a' VALUE AT SA:-

'a' VALUE AT SB:-

'a' VALUE AT SC:-

'a' VALUE AT SD:-
'a' VALUE AT SE:-

As per the guidelines, the 'a' values for every angle are satisfied.
'L' VALUE AT SA:-

'L' VALUE AT SB:-

'L' VALUE AT SC:-

'L' VALUE AT SD:-

'L' VALUE AT SE:-

COMPARISON TABLE:-
| SECTION | REQUIRED CLEARANCE | MEASURED CLEARANCE | REMARKS |
| SA | 10 | 9.9490 | FAIL |
| SB | 10 | 10.000 | PASS |
| SC | 10 | 0.1139 | FAIL |
| SD | 10 | 2.8875 | FAIL |
| SE | 10 | 5.9973 | FAIL |
CONCLUSION:-
Except for the section SB all others failed to satisfy the minimum requirement of the clearance value 'L' which is 10mm as per European regulations. In addition to that, the wheel protrudes outside the fender which was not at all acceptable so the entire design was failed and forwarding the report to the styling team to ensure the wheel arc area will be redesigned as per the requirements necessary.
