Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Wheel Arch:

Wheel arch is the semicircular part of the Fender over the wheel. It protects the the car and pedestrian from stones and chipps which thrown when wheel rotates. The plastic cover is mounted in the wheel arch to prevent from the dust, mud, chipps and stones. There are three types of wheel arch standard.

1. JAPAN STANDARD:

In Japan standard the Clearance 'L' Between the tyre and fender should not less than '5mm' at all the points (A,B and C). The clearance is measured like shown in the Fig. The clearance value should be minimum 5mm to satisfy Japan regulations.

2.US Standard:

In US Standard also the minimum clearance between the tyre and fender is 5mm. In this method the clearance value is measured for every 15 degree from -20 deg from the wheel centre. The clearance should be minimum 5mm to satisfy the US Standard regulations.

3.European Standard:

In European method the clearance is measured like Japan standard. Additionally 150mm line drawn from the center of wheel to the fender wheel arch. then the line is drawn between C and E in middle like shown in fig.

At Point SA:

At Point SB:

At Point SC:

At Point SD:

At Point SE:

From the Wheel Arch Calculation the values are tabulated below,

The clearance value should be minimum '10mm' to satisfy the European regulations.

From the above table the clearance value doesn't satisfy the European regulations at all points. So, the given fender doesn't pass the European regulations.
