Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Aim:

To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

Wheel Arch Gap:

it is a standard Gap between Tire & Fender defined by various country regulatary groups to ensure the safety of vehicle and pedestarians. This Standard Gap helps to ensure less Chipping of vehicle due to Small Stones from road hitting the Fender and it also helps to not throw/Push Stones at pedestarians.

European Standard:

According to European Standard the Gap between Wheel and Fender should be greater than 10MM, at the defined points (shown in image below). If the Fender does not meet this standard Gap at all the points, than it does not satisfy then it needs to modify.

Study:

I did the Gap study of given Design at the points according to the European Standard and found that the design does not pass the European Standard Requirements.

Below is the Study image and Table of calculation.

Wheel and Fender Clearance Gap Calculation & Verification Table:

Section Standard CL Required (MM) Clearance Length (MM) Difference (MM)
SA-SA 10 10 0
SB-SB 10 9.95 0.05
SC-SC 10 0 10
SD-SD 10 -2.8 12.8
SE-SE 10 -5.9 15.9

Result:

The Given Design does not meet the European Standards of fender.
