Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

FENDER WHEEL ARCH CHALLENGE

INTRODUCTION:

The wheel arch is an arch-shaped cavity in the body of a vehicle which houses a wheel. It has two important functions. It severs for the safety of perdestrians and other BIW parts because the wheel is situated in the body of a vehicle.

Wheel Arch is the semi-circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vechicle. The design of the wheel arch of the fander should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passenger compartment and pedestarions from the projetion of water mud and stones.

Dirt,sand,snow,ect from getting thrown into the vehicle or the BIW area as well as outside the vehicle or pedestarians on the road. For the vehicle to has its permit in defferent countries, the wheel arch of fenders must be compliant with the standards and regulations set by respective countries.

EUROPEAN REGULATION:

The European regulations a pre-determined clearance or a minimum distance of 10mm to be maintained between the fender and respective tyre at particular points,along the tyre profile as shown below.

FENDER WHEEL AERC REGULATION

Japan Regulations:

  • The clearance ‘L’ for tire, hub, cap and fender is to be measured within area K and create clearance check chart to validate
  • The value of L should be greater than 5mm at all positions
  • Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel

US Regulations:

  • Clearance ‘L’ is to be checked at all positions from -100° to 100° and create clearance check chart to validate
  • The value of L should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations
  • Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel

EUROPEAN REGULATIONS:

1. The clearance "L" should be measured at sections SA,SB, SC, SD and SE and create a clearance check chart to validate.

2. In all five sections the value of "L" should be greater than 10mm to satisfy European Regulation.

3. Wheel guard requirements the value of a should be more than 5mm at line 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees rewards from the centerl vertical axis of the wheel.

CALCULATION OF WHEEL ARCH AREA ACCORDING TO EUROPEAN REGULATIONS:

1. A datum plane is created at outermost face of the wheel.

2. Sketch is created on the new datam plane.

3. A Horizontal and vertical axis is drawn from the center of the wheel.

4. The vertical axis intersection point is labelled as SA dropped at the center of the wheel.

5. Two lines SB and SC are created at 30 degrees Foeward of SA and 50 degrees rearward of SA respectively.

6. A line 150mm is drawn perpendicular to the horizontal axis and normal from the normal point on fender which gives point SD.

7. A point is created 150mm vertically above the center line .

8. A line SE is drawn from the wheel center.

9. The midpoint of the arc cut by the section SC and SD results in a new section SE.

10. The value of "L" at each section and the value of SA are found out to determine whether the fender satisfies the EUROPEAN STANDARDS.

CALCULATION OF THE VALUE OF CLEARANCE "L":

The clearance "L" as shoen in the above figure at all the five section SA,SB,SC,SD,and SE should be greater than 10mm.

1. Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SA

"L"=10mm

2. Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SB

"L"= 9.9490mm

3.Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SC

"L"= 0.113949mm

4.Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SD

"L"= 2.8875mm

5.Measuring "L" for the given wheel and fender at SE

"L"=5.9973mm

CLEARANCE "L" OBTAINED SECTION SA,SB,SC,SD,SE

SECTION DISTANCE RESULT
SA 10<=10 PASS
SB 9.9490<10 FAIL
SC 0.113<10 FAIL
SD 2.8875<10 FAIL
SE 5.9973<10 FAIL

CONCULATION:

.

We can conclude that the fender dose not pass the EUROPEAN REGULATIONS as the min clearance "L" between the fender wheel arch and the wheel for vehicle and pedestrians safety is 10mm and this design dose not meet the requirements.

The fender FAILS as the values dose not lie in between the values of the EUROPEAN STANDARDS.
