Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

                                           FENDER DESIGN - WHEEL ARCH

OBJECTIVE  OF THE WHEEL ARCH:

     Main objective of the project is to calculate the wheel arch area, and also conclude, if the car will pass the European standurds or not. Because of countries are fallow the different regulation.

WHEEL ARCH:

 Wheel arch is the semi-circular part of the vehicle is position on the top of the wheel. Wheelarch cladding  are there to stop water and dirt ingress from getting into tight spots around the wings of the car to prevent corosion.

They also protect any electrics or pipework from the water. they are originaly made for vehicles  when are suposed to take more abuse in terms of off road or water wading. It prevents scraping of paint near wheel arches also prevents water  from getting inside the panel which could  lead to rust.

Wheel arch ismust be shielded the wheel, because it will ensure that passengers and pedesstrain are not affect by thestones , mud, water from the bottom of the car.

EUROPIAN STANDURDS FOR WHEEL ARCH:

 1.  Measure  clearance value "L" at sections sA- SA, SB-SB , SC-SC,SD-SD, SE SE  and ensure the value of  "L"

2. If we pass the Euro regislions, first we need the cearance  [L] value should be greater than the 10mm.

SKETCH FOR FINDING THE WHEEL ARCH AREA:

  •  A  horizantal  and vertical axis is drawn from the center of the wheel.
  • The vertical axis intersection point is labelled as SA
  • similar references  are drawn at 30 degree to the left and 50 degree to the right of the section SA and are named SB  and SC respectively.
  • A line of 150m  is drawn perpendiculer to the horizontal axis and the normal from that point on the fender gives us SE.
  • The midpoint of the arch cut by the section  SC and SE results in a new section SD.
  • The value of 'L' at each section and the value of 'a' are found out to determine whether the fender satisfies the Euopean standurds as shown below.

Analysis of 'L' value and 'a' value

sections Required value in all sectons 'SA' Measured value 'SB' Measured value 'SC' Measured value 'SD" Measured value 'SE' Measured value
'L' Value >=10 9.94 10.00 0.11 -2.84 -5.90
'a' Value >=5 25.99 43.64 38.35 42.66 47.62

   'L' value at section SA:

 'L' Value at Section SB:

'L' Value at Section SC:

'L' Value at Section SD:

'L' Value at Section SE:

As per the European dtandurds, the value of 'L' should be greater than 10mm. But at section SB,  the value of L is equal to 10mm and at other sections the value of 'L' is less than 10mm. so it does not satisfy the condition L>10mm to meet the European standurds in any of the sections.

Wheel Gaurd Requirement:

Value of 'a' at SB:

Value of 'a' at SC:

The value of 'a' at the section SB and SC are greater than 5mm. so it satisfies the criteria for wheel guard requirement.

Wheel Arch Area:

CONCLUSION:

From the above results, we can conclude that the given fender does not pass the European standurds for wheel arch area.
