Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
AIM: Want to calculate the wheel arc distance and check whether the car passes the european standard
GIVEN DESIGN:
EUROPEAN REGULATION REQUIRMENT:

To measure the distance and to achive the european standard we need to do the following steps in design
- Take the outline of the wheel and fender using project curve command.
- Take vertical and horizontal reference line through the centre of the wheel. Mark the vertical line as SA
- From the centre point draw a 50 deegre line towards the fender on the right side of the wheel mark it as SC and same as draw 30 deegre line on left side of the wheel towards fender and mark it as SB.
- From the horizontal reference line draw a line of length 150mm towards the fender and mark as SE
- Now take the mid point between SC and SE mark the mid point as SD
- Measure the distances between the points on the wheel circle and fender curve. All of these should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European regs.
- Then, measure the horizontal distances from SA, SB, and SC points to the fender curve and it should be at least 5mm.
- Check whether the design passes these conditions and conclude whether it can pass the European Regulations Requirement.
Challenge:
Sketch as be drawn

Lets measure all the five sections
SA-SA:
25.5>10mm

SB-SB:
44.7>10mm

SC-SC:
38.6>10mm

SD-SD:
43.0> 10mm

SE-SE:
47.3>10mm
Now lets measure the horizontal distance between the wheel and the fender curve
Distance between SA point and fender outer curve = 9.96mm(Pass)

Distance between SB point and fender outer curve = 10.0mm(Pass)

Distance between SC point and fender outer curve = 0.19mm(Fail)

Tabulation:
| DISTANCE(mm) | RESULT | |
| SA-SA | 25.5>10 | PASS |
| SB-SB | 44.7>10 | PASS |
| SC-SC | 38.6>10 | PASS |
| SD -SD | 43.0>10 | PASS |
| SE-SE | 47.3>10 | PASS |
| FROM OUTER CURVE OF FENDER TO WHEEL OUTER | DISTANCE(mm) | RESULT |
| SA | 9.96>5 | PASS |
| SB | 10.0>5 | PASS |
| SC | 0.19<5 | FAIL |
COUNCLUSION:
The given design satisfies all European standards but one, i.e. the distance from SC point to the fender curve (which is just 0.194 mm), which is way below the recommended 5 mm distance. Therefore, this fender cannot pass the European standards. The design should be reverted back to the class A Styleing team telling them to modify the design and increase the gap there.
