Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Aim:

Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

Objective:

  • Create the detum plane on outer face of the wheel.
  • Draw the sketch by help of European regulation.
  • Measure the distance between wheel outer face point and fender arc.
  • Tabulate the result to conculde the final result.

Definition:

An arch-shaped cavity in the body of a vehicle, which houses a wheel is termed as wheel arch. So the design of fender wheel arch should be in a manner which can protect pedestrian from tyre projections.

It is a semicircular profile above wheels designed for enclosing tire within the fender The wheel arch is designed considering all possible motions the tire undergoes while the vehicle is in motion.

Different countries have different regulations for wheel arch.

European regulations :-

  • The important parameter which is considered in the designing of wheel arch or wheel is the clearance between wheel and fender during the vehicle bump conditions.
  • Requirements have been proposed by vehicle and road safety community to the minimum requirement of wheel arc distance
    from the wheel for safety.

Proceduer to calculate clearancer-

  1. Measure clearance L at section SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD & SE-SE and prepare clearance check chart to validate.
  2. At all five sections the clearance value should be more Greater than 10mm to satisfythe european standards.
  3. Wheel guard reqirment: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the centeral vertical axis of axis of wheel.

CALCULATING THE WHEEL ARCh AREA IN NX CAD-

CLEARANCE 'L' CHECK

1. Creating the detum plane on outer face of the wheel.

2.Draw sketch as per european standard.

3.Creating the intersection points on sketch line and wheel arc.

4.Projection the point from sketch to the fender face to get SA,SB,SC,SD,SE.

5.Meauring the distance bitween each sketch point to fender points.

  • Distance between SA-SA

Minimum Distance is = 9.9536 mm

  • Distance between SB-SB

Minimum Distance is = 10 mm

  • Distance between SC-SC

Minimum Distance is = ( -0.1139 mm )

  • Distance between SD-SD

Minimum Distance is =( -2.8875 mm )

  • Distance between SE-SE

Minimum Distance is =( -5.9973 mm )

6.Clearance chart .

SECTION CLEARANCE VALUE RESULT
SA-SA 9.9536 mm Fail
SB-SB 10 mm Pass
SC-SC -0.1139 mm Fail
SD-SD -2.8875 mm Fail
SE-SE -5.9973 Fail

CLEARANCE 'a' CHECK

  • Draw clearance 'a' line between fender and wheel at SB 30 degrees forward and SC 50 degrees rearward.

Minimum Distance is = 44.77 mm

  • Measure this clearance 'b' and prepare clearance check chart.

Minimum Distance is = 38.35 mm

SECTION SB SC
CLEARANCE A 44.77 MM 38.35 MM
RESULT PASS PASS

Conclusion:-

  • Negative sign indicates that the wheel arc is behind the wheel
  • All the section don\'t have the CL L value at least 10mm, only SA is seen to have value 10mm
  • I have study from the above results, We have conclusion that the fender does not pass the European Regulations, as the Minimum Clearence value of 'L' between the fender wheel arch and wheel for vehicle and Safety is 10 mm and this design does't meet the requirement.
  • The design should be reverted back to the class A designer telling him to modify the design and increase the gap there.
