Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Objectives :
Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.
Wheel Arc
arch-shaped cavity in the body of a vehicle , which houses a wheel. it is a part of fender.
- To avoid chipping of stone, mud, solid particles etc to the engine compartment.
- It also helps preventing particles being thrown towards pedestrains.
European Regulation Requirement :

- Take the outline of the wheel and the fender.
- make the centre of the wheel circle.
- Draw horizhontal and vertical perpandicular axes from the centre of the wheel circle.
- Draw line at 30 degree and 50 degree from the centre
- make a point on the fender line a 150 mm from the horiozontal
- Extend a line to this point from the centre
- Then make a line that is exactly between the 50 degree line and line made on 150 mm point.
- Measure the distance between the points on the wheel circle snd frnder curve. all of these should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the European standards.

Section Clearence Comment
SA 9.94 Fail
SB 10.00 Pass
SC -0.11 Fail
SD -2.89 Fail
SE -5.96 Fail
Conclusion :
Negative sign indicates that wheel is outside the wheel arc.
does not satisfy the European standard of 10 mm or beyond. So the styling team should be notify.
