Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Fender Wheel Arch
AIM: - Study the wheel arch area and prove whether the car will pass the standards or not using European regulations.
Introduction
wheel arch (plural wheel arches) The shaped part of the bodywork of a car or other vehicle that allows the wheel to be accessed, and in the case of front wheels, enable them to be steered.
The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender.
It should have a sufficient clearance between tyre and wheel arch. So, that it doesn’t touch the wheel arch area during suspension.
The design of wheel arch of a fender should be such that it must shield wheel and protect both passengers’ compartment and pedestrians from projection of water, mud and stones.
For the vehicle to has its use permit in different countries, the wheel arch of fenders must be compliant with the standards and regulation set by the respectively countries.
European Standards Requirements

In all five section the clearance L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European standards requirements.
Wheel Guard Requirement: The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30 forward and 50 rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

Obtaining the value of clearance “L”
Measuring at section SA Value

At Section SA Value is 9.9489mm.
Measuring at section SB Value

At Section SB Value is 10mm.
Measuring at section SC Value

At Section SC Value is -0.1138mm I have used ‘– Sign’ because this measured direction is upward direction but I have required 10 mm is inward side means in this case the Wheel is above the fender face.
Measuring at section SD Value

At Section SD Value is -1.7875mm I have used ‘– Sign’ because this measured direction is upward direction but I have required 10 mm is inward side means in this case the wheel is above the fender face.
Measuring at section SE Value

At Section ED Value is -3.5901mm I have used ‘– Sign’ because this measured direction is upward direction but I have required 10 mm is inward side means ‘– sign’ show that wheel is outside the fender face.

Conclusion
From the above measurement and result obtain that the given fender doesn’t pass the European Standard for Wheel Arch Area. The 'a' clearance pass the European standard but the value of 'L' is not pass.
