Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

FENDER DESIGN - WHEEL ARCH:

The fender is the side closing component for the engine compartment. Its major role is to avoid chipping sand, small stones and mud particles inside the engine compartment when the wheels rotate. Fender also plays a major role to prevent injuries for pedestrians. We have two types of Fender half bumper type and full bumper type. The difference between the two types is its size. The raw material usage plays a major role and so half bumper is economical. The drip area and wheel arch are the two important things to be considered while designing a fender.

WHEEL ARCH:

There are standards all over the world for the wheel arch of a car. From country to country they will fix a certain regulation considering the infrastructure available in their country. Basically when the wheel is seen from the front side and if it was outside the car the chipping will be more and that causes damage to the engine compartment and the pedestrians.

JAPAN REGULATION REQUIREMENT:

Clearance L of tire, hub, cap & fender in three different positions within area K and produce a clearance check chart to validate.

Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all three positions.

WHEEL GUARD REQMT: The value of “a” shall be more than 5mm at line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel

EUROPEAN REGULATION REQUIREMENT:

CL L at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, and SE-SE and produce CL check chart validation & at all five sections, the CL L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy European regulations.

WHEEL GUARD REQMT: The value of “a” shall be more than 5mm at line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

US REGULATION REQUIREMENTS:

Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* & make the clearance check table.

All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations.

The value of “a” shall be more than 5mm at line 30* forward & 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

Here in this report, we have checked a fender for European regulation, We have drawn the points as per the requirements and here is the distance.

RESULT:

As per the evaluation, we come to know this wheel arch does not pass the European regulation requirement. Only the L value of SB is PASS. The other four points are less than the required value. So we need to change the design.
