Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Wheel Arc

Wheel arch is an arch-shaped cavity in the body of a vehicle, which houses a wheel. For this purpose protective fender guards were created that are assembled in the wheel arch.

Purpose of Wheel Arc:

  • Wheel Arch is the semi-circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vehicle.
  • The design of Wheel arch of a fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers' compartment and pedestrians from projection of water, mud and stones.
  • For the vehicle to has its use permit in different countries, the wheel arch of fenders must be compliant with the standards and regulations set by the respective countries.

Objective of Wheel Arc challenge:

Using the Europian Standard, Calculate the Wheel Arc area and prove whether the car will pass the standards or Not.

European Standard for Wheel Arc:

Measure L at sections SA-SA SB-SB SC-SC SD-SD SE-SE

✓ At all five sections the CL L value should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the European regulations.

✓ Wheel guard reqmt: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel

Results for Wheel Arc:

Sketch done as per Europian Standard:

Values for SB:

The obtained value is 10mm.

Values for SA:

The obtained value is 10 mm.

Values for SC:

The obtained value is -0.113mm.

Value of SD:

The obtained value is -2.87mm.

Value of SE:

The obtained value is -5.953 mm.

Table obtained for the given model:

Section Clearance of "L" in mm Comments
SB 10<10 Pass
SA 10<10 Pass
SC -0.113<10 Fail
SD -2.87<10 Fail
SE -5.953<10 Fail

Result:

While calculating the wheel arc for various section it is observed that the section SB & SA passes the clearance regulations but the sections SC,SD& SE are failing the european standards.

This given Wheel arc challenge doesn't pass the Europian Standard Regulations.
