Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Fender
In the context of cars, the term "fender" refers to the protective panels that are typically located above the wheels. Fenders are designed to cover the wheel well and shield the vehicle's body from dirt, debris, and water that may be kicked up by the rotating wheels.
Fenders serve several purposes, including:
- Protection: Fenders help protect the car's body and paint from damage caused by road debris, stones, or other objects that may be thrown up by the tires.
- Safety: Fenders provide a barrier between the tires and other vehicles or pedestrians, reducing the risk of accidents or injuries caused by contact with the rotating wheels.
- Aerodynamics: Fenders are often aerodynamically shaped to minimize drag and improve the vehicle's fuel efficiency by reducing air resistance.
- Style: Fenders contribute to the overall appearance and design of the car, adding to its aesthetic appeal. They can vary in size, shape, and style depending on the vehicle's make, model, and design.
Wheel arch:
The wheel arch, also known as the wheel well or fender well, is the curved or recessed area surrounding the wheels of a vehicle. It is the space between the body of the car and the tires. The wheel arch serves several purposes:
Accommodating the Wheels: The primary function of the wheel arch is to provide enough space to accommodate the wheels and allow them to turn freely, without interfering with the body of the vehicle.
Protecting the Body: The wheel arch helps protect the vehicle's body from debris, dirt, and water that may be thrown up by the rotating wheels. It helps prevent these elements from entering the interior of the vehicle or causing damage to the bodywork.
Style and Design: The shape and design of the wheel arch contribute to the overall aesthetics of the vehicle. Different car models may have varying wheel arch designs, which can range from sleek and rounded to more angular and pronounced.
Aerodynamics: In some cases, the shape of the wheel arch is optimized for aerodynamic purposes. It may be sculpted to minimize drag and improve the vehicle's overall efficiency by reducing air resistance.
The wheel arches are typically integrated into the car's body panels, such as the fenders, and are designed to provide sufficient clearance for the wheels while complementing the overall design of the vehicle.
To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.
Step1 : create a datum plane for the sketch we draw
Step 2: draw the sketch of the line we want to create in its positions
Step3 : project the wheel top most radius and fenders bottom most radius.
Step 4 : measure the distance between the intersection
The distance between them is greater then 10 mm is its in the European standard.
