Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Objective
To calculate a wheel arc area and prove whether the car will pass or not using europian standards.
Introduction
Fender
Fender is a part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
The main purpose of fenders on cars is that they shield the wheels and they protect the passengers, the pedestrians, and the other vehicles from stones, mud, liquid, and other debris that can fly in the air because of the speeding rotating wheels while the car is running.
Wheel Arch
It is a curved part of the Fender positioned right above the Wheel. The Wheel Arch is designed such that it protects both the pedestrian and car cabin from mud, water rocks and other road spray Different countries have different wheelarch regulations in place, and the wheel arch design has to comply with them to be deemed usable in that country. For avoiding design alterations of the same vehicle to meet the different regulations in different countries, the maximum values of the concerned regulation parameters are taken into consideration for design purpose.
Europian standard for wheel arch:

- The clearance 'L' as shown in above figure at all five section SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE should be greater than 10mm.
- Wheel guard requirement:The distance between the fender and wheel outer should be greater than 5mm at a line of forward 30 degree and rearward 50 degree.
Obtained values of "L" clearance:
Sketch is drawn on the wheel face as per the European standards provided and projected on the wheel arch at sections SA, SB, SC,SD and SE to measure 'L'.
Software used: NX CAD 12

Value at SB:

here, the value of L is 10mm at the SA
Value at SA:

here the value of L is 9.9490mm at SB
Value at SC

the value of L is -0.113949mm at SC
Value at SD:

the value of L is -2.9269mm at SD
Value at SE:

The value of L is -5.9973mm at SE
Table A: obtained by L clearance at SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE
| SECTION | CLEARANCE "L" | COMMENT |
| SA | 9.9490<10 | FAIL |
| SB | 10=10 | PASS |
| SC | -0.113949<10 | FAIL |
| SD | -2.9269<10 | FAIL |
| SE | -5.9973<10 | FAIL |
Values obtained for "a" clearance:
1. Value of 'a' clearance at the 30 deg forwarded from the centre axis.

The value of a at the 30 deg forward from the centre axis line is 66.3570mm.
2. Value of 'a' clearance at the 50 deg rearward from the centre axis.
The value of a at the 50deg rearward line from the centre axis is 55.3397mm.
Table B: The value obtained from SB line 30deg forward from the centre axis and 50deg rearward from the centre axis
| SECTION | ANGLE(in deg) | "a" CLEARANCE(in mm) | COMMENT |
| SB | 30 | 66.3570 | PASS |
| SC | 50 | 55.3387 | PASS |
from the table B values passes the fender of europian standards.
Wheelarch area by given fender:

Total wheelarch area of given fender is 24432.9334mm2
Conclusion:
From the above results obtained, we can conclude that the given fender doesn't pass the European Standards for Wheelarch area and we find out area of wheelarch.
