Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Aim: To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at the desired points and check whether the car passes the desired standard as per regulations.

Fender Arch :
- The wheel arch is the semi-circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vehicle.
- The design of the wheel arch of the fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers and pedestrians from the projection of stone and mud.
- For the vehicle to have different permits in different countries, the wheel arch of the fender must be compliant with the standard and regulations set by respective countries.
Different Fender regulation by different countries is as follow :
European standard :
- The European regulation requires a pre-determined clearance or a minimum distance of 10 mm to be maintained between the fender and respective tire at particular points, along the tire profile as shown below.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of 'a' should be more than 5 mm at line 30 degree forward and 50 degrees reward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

US Regulations :
- Clearance 'L' is to be checked at all positions from -100 to 100 degrees and create clearance check chart to validate.
- The value of L should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the regulations.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of a should be more than 5 mm at line 30 degree forward and 50 degrees reward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

Japan Regulations :
- The clearance 'L' is to be measured within area K and create a clearance check chart to validate.
- The value of L should be greater than 5 mm at all points.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of a should be more than 5 mm at line 30 degree forward and 50 degrees reward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

Calculation of Wheel arch area according to European Regulations :
- A Datum plane is created at the outermost face of the wheel.
- The horizontal and vertical line is created from the center of the wheel and make it a reference.
- Create a 30-degree and 50-degree line with respect to the vertical line.
- Now take an offset of 150mm from the horizontal line.
- Now create 5 points on the plane and project them into the fender.
- Now measure the clearance 'L'.

AT 30 DEGREE LINE SB:

10 mm observed which passes the check as per regulations.
AT 90 DEGREE LINE SA:

9.94 mm which does not pass the check.
AT POINT 50 DEGREES "SC":

0.1139mm on negative side- FAILED IN CHECK
AT POINT SD:

2.8875mm on negative side- FAILED IN CHECK
AT POINT SE:

5.9973mm on negative side- FAILED IN CHECK
MEASURING CLEARANCE VALUES "a" FOR WHEEL GUARD REQUIREMENT:
AT POINT SB: 30 Degrees

a= 44.75mm
AT POINT SC: 50 Degrees

a= 38.35 mm
| L- SB | L- SA | L- SC | L- SD | L- SE | "a" = SB | "a" = SC | |
| 10mm | 9.94mm | -0.113mm | -2.88mm | -5.99mm | 44.75mm | 38.35mm | |
| PASS | FAIL | FAIL | FAIL | FAIL | PASS | PASS |
CONCLUSION:
- We have checked the clearance value of 'L' and 'a' as per European standards.
- From the analysis, we can say that only section SB-SB passed and all other section fails.
