Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Objective:
To calculate the wheel arc for given Fender model, by means of the European standards regulations.
Introduction:
Wheel arc calculation is necessary for the fender design to pass the local regulation which are based on the local road conditions.
Wheel arch is a semi-circular area in fender, which houses the wheel well. It should have a sufficient clearance between tyre and wheel arch. So, that it doesn’t touch the wheel arch area during suspension. The clearance value differ from region to region, here are few regulations.
Japan Regulation Standard:
The clearance value will be more than the 5mm at 30 degree at forward and 50 degree at backward from the central vertical line.

European Regulation Standard:
The clearance value will be more than 10mm at 30 degrees at forward and 50 degree at backward and line 150mm above X-axis and Mid-point between 50 degree and line above 150mm.

US Standard:
This is carried out for pedestrian safety of the car, here by using the European regulations requirement to define the design given for calculation.

STEPS FOLLOWED IN CREATING THE SKETCH REQUIREMENT FOR EUROPEAN STANDARDS
- A Horizontal and vertical axis is drawn from the centre of the wheel.
- The vertical axis intersection point is labelled as A.
- Similar references are drawn at 30 degrees to left and 50 degree to the right and named it as B and C respectively.
- A line of 150mm is drawn perpendicular to the horizontal axis and normal from the normal point on fender which gives point E.
- The midpoint of the arc cut by the sections C and E results in a new section D.
- The value of 'L' at each section and the value of 'a 'are found out to detrmine whether the fender satisfies the european standards as shown below.

VALUE OF L AT B SECTION:
The Value Of L at B Section is 10 mm.

VALUE OF L AT A SECTION:
The Value Of L at A Section is 9.9490 mm.

VALUE OF L AT C SECTION:
The Value Of L at C Section is -0.113949 mm.

VALUE OF L AT E SECTION:
The Value Of L at E Section is -2.8875 mm.

VALUE OF L AT D SECTION:
The Value Of L at E Section is -5.9973 mm.

VALUE OF A AT B SECTION:
The Value Of A at A Section is 43.6263 mm.

VALUE OF AT A SECTION:
The Value Of A at A Section is 38.3599 mm.

The above figure shows the following result
- OB plot satisfies the 10mm distance
- OA plot doesn’t satisfies the 9.9490 mm distance which doesn’t go with the standard.
- OC plot doesn’t satisfy, there is -0.113949 mm clearance which doesn’t go with the standard.
- OE plot doesn’t satisfy, there is -2.8875 mm clearance which doesn’t go with the standard.
- OD Plot doesn’t satisfy, there is -5.9973 mm clearance which doesn’t go with the standard.
- BB1 Plot satisfy, there is 43.6263 mm clearance which go with the standard.
- DD1 Plot satisfy, there is 38.3599 mm clearance which go with the standard.
Conclusion
Hence we can declare that the following fender wouldn’t pass the standards the styling team must redesign the fender.
