Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
DESIGN FENDER-WHEEL ARCH
Objective:
In this challenge I am calculating the wheel arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes European standards.
Given part file of Wheel Arch:
Introduction:
Wheel arch:-
- It is a semicircular profile above wheels designed for enclosing tire within the fender the wheel arch is designed considering all possible motions the tyre undergoes while the vehicle is in motion.

- The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender. Corrosion had occured around the splash plate at the back of the wheel arch. The car has big, high-defination headlights that extends to the wheel arch.

Calculation of Wheel arch using European standards:

Wheel arch verification using European standards
- The important parameterwhich is considered in the designing of wheel arch or wheel is the clearance between wheel and the fender during the vehicle bump conditions as well as pedestrians and engine compartment safety.
- Requirements have been proposed by vehicle and road safety community to the minium requirementof wheel arch distance from the wheel for safety.
According to European Rules:
1. Measure of "L" is done on sections SA, SB, SC, SD,SE.
2. At all sections the vlue of "L" should be greaterthan or equal to 10mm
3. Wheel guard requirement: The value of "a"shall be greaterthan or equal to 5mm at 30 Deg forward and 50 Deg rearward from the central axis of wheel.
The below fig shown the sketch is drawn on the wheel face as per the European standards-

- In the above fig- we have open the given file on siemans NX CAD 12. Firstly creat the point on the center referance lines . Then project that on the wheel arch at section SA, SB,SC,SD,SE to measure the distance / clearance "L", "a" and the wheel arch area.
Calculating the clearance value "L" and "a" as follows
Measuring "L" value for the given wheel and Fender at SB
then the value of 'L' at SB=10.0000mm
Measuring "a" value for the given wheel and Fender at SB
then the value of 'a' at SB=48.6263mm

Measuring "L" value for the given wheel and Fender at SA
then the value of 'L' at SA=9.9490mm

Measuring "a" value for the given wheel and Fender at SA
then the value of 'a' at SA=30.992mm

Measuring "L" value for the given wheel and Fender at SC
then the value of 'L' at SC=0.1139mm

Measuring "a" value for the given wheel and Fender at SC
then the value of 'a' at SC=43.3597mm

Measuring "L" value for the given wheel and Fender at SD
then the value of 'L' at SD=2.8901mm

Measuring "a" value for the given wheel and Fender at SD
then the value of 'a' at SD=47.6665mm

Measuring "L" value for the given wheel and Fender at SE
then the value of 'L' at SE=5.9973mm

Measuring "a" value for the given wheel and Fender at SE
then the value of 'a' at SE=52.6252mm

According to the measurements the table drawn as:

From comparing the above five sections the fender doesn't pass the European standards for the wheel arch.
Conclusion:
From the above results we can conclude that the fender does not pass the European regulations as the minimum clearance between the fender arch wheel to the outer most wheel is 10 mm and this design does not meet this minimum clearance so fender design is failed for the European Regulation standard.
