Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
- WHEEL ARCH CHALLENGE
AIM:To check whether the given design passes the European standards or not.

FENDER:
Fender is a part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
WHEEL ARCH:
It is a semicircular profile above wheels designed for enclosing tire within the fender. The wheel arch is designed considering all possible motions the tire undergoes while the vehicle is in motion. The wheel arch also ensures stopping any debris that could possibly fly outside the wheel well and hit pedestrians.
There are few standards criteria defined for designing the wheel arch. The profile has to pass through these conditions to meet the expectations,
The European regulations requires a pre-determined clearance or a minimum distance of 10mm to be maintained between the fender and respective tyre at particular points.

PROCEDURE:
- Make the centre of the wheel circle.
- Draw horizontal and vertical perpendicular axes from the centre of the wheel circle.
- Draw lines at 30 degrees and 50 degrees from the centre.
- Make a point on the fender line at 150mm from the horizontal.
- Extend a line to this point from the centre.
- Then make a line that is exactly between the 50-degree line and the line made on the 150mm point.
- Measure the distances between the points on the wheel circle and fender curve. All of these should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European Standards.

CASE STUDY
According to AC Line

Distance between AC point and fender outer curve = 10 mm (pass)
AB Line,

Distance between AB point and fender outer curve = 9.9490 mm (Fail)
AD Line,

Distance between AD point and fender outer curve = 0.11394 mm (Fail)
AE Line,

Distance between AE point and fender outer curve = -2.8875 mm (Fail)
AF Line,

Distance between AF point and fender outer curve = -5.9973 mm (Fail)
RESULT:
| Line | Required clearance | Actual Clearance | Result |
| AB | 10mm | 9.9490mm | Fail |
| AC | 10mm | 10.000mm | Pass |
| AD | 10mm | 0.1139mm | Fail |
| AE | 10mm | 2.8875mm | Fail |
| AF | 10mm | 5.9973mm | Fail |
CONCLUSION:
Thus the Fender does not pass the European Regulations as the minimum clearance between the fender arch wheel to the outer most wheel is 10 mm.
