Calculations of Wheel Arch gap

Aim :

wheel arch gap calculation and check whether the car passes the European standard required points.

Objective :

• Study about the different type of wheel arch gap as per required standards.
• Using European standard draw lines at the required angle and points.
• Measure the distance between each angles and mention the model is pass the test or fail.

Fender :

Fender is a part of an automobile. The primary purpose of fender is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

TYPES OF WHEEL ARCH REGULATIONS

EUROPEAN STANDARDS:

Measure Clearance L at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.

Clearance L value should be greater than 10 mm in all five sections, to satisfy the European regulations.

The value of 'a' (Wheel guard space) shall be more than 5 mm at the line 30° and 50° from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

JAPAN REGULATIONS:

• Measure clearance L of tire ,hub, cap & fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
• Clearance shpuld be greater than 5 mm in all the those three positions.
• The value of "a" Wheel guard requirement shall be more than 5 mim at a line 30° and 50° from the central vertical axis of wheel.

US REGULATIONS:

• Make clearance check details on all positions from -100° to 100° & make the clearance check table.
• All values should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the regulations. The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30° forward and 50°.
• rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

Clearance L at the designated 5 points

The clearance distance 'L' is calculated at points SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE, which should be greater than or equal to 10mm

i.) Clearance 'L' at SA-SA

L = 9.95mm

ii.) Clearance 'L' at SB-SB

L = 10mm

iii.) Clearance 'L' at SC-SC

L = -0.11mm

iv.) Clearance 'L' at SD-SD

L = -2.83mm

v.) Clearance 'L' at SE-SE

L = -5.94mm

Measuring the clearance vlaue'a' for Wheel Guard Requirement

i.) Clearance 'a' at 30° line SB

a = 44.75mm

i.) Clearance 'a' at 50° line SC

a = 38.37mm

CONCLUSION:

From the above results we can conclude that the Fender does not pass the European Regulations, as the minimum clearance L between the Fennder Wheel Arch and Wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is 10mm and this design does not meet the requirement.
