Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Aim:
To calculate the wheel arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard or not.
Fender:
Fender is the US english term for the part of an automobile (vehicle body) that frames a wheel well(the fender underside).
Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
When vehicle is moving, tyres piick up stones and others and hurl them in all directions. Fenders are basically present to prevent any injuries to pedestrians and contain the motion of these particles.
Wheel Arch:
The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender. Corrosion had occured arround the splash plate at the back of the wheel arch.
Japan Standard:
Measure clearance L of tire, hub, cap, and fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
Clearance must bre greater than 5mm in all the three positions.
Wheel guard reqmt: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

European Standard:
Measure CL L at sections SA-SA SB-SB SC-SC SD-Sd SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.
At all five sections the CL L value should br greater than 10mm to satisfy the european regulations.
Wheel guard reqmt: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

US Standard:
Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* and make the clearance check table.
All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the refulations.
The values of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

European Standard Wheel Arch Calculation:
This is the skin given for calculate the wheel arch,

By using the skin,create the section SA SB SC SD SE. This are the sections created,
The clearance value 'L' at section SA, SB, SC, SD, SE are;
Section SA:

the clearance value 'L' of section SA is 9.9490mm.
Section SB:

the clearance value 'L' of section SB is 10.0000mm.
Section SC:

the clearance value 'L' of section SC is 0.1139mm.
Section SD:

the clearance value 'L' of section SD is 2.8875mm.
Section SE:

the clearance value 'L' of section SE is 5.9973mm.

Clearance Distance (a) :

The clearance value 'a' for section SB is 44.7577mm.

The clearance value 'a' for section SC is 38.3599mm.
Result in Table:
| Section | L(>10mm) | Result | a(>5mm) | Result |
| SA-SA | 9.9490 | FAIL | ||
| SB-SB | 10 | PASS | 44.7577 | PASS |
| SC-SC | 0.1139 | FAIL | 38.3599 | PASS |
| SD-SD | 2.8875 | FAIL | ||
| SE-SE | 5.9973 | FAIL |
Conclusion:
From the above result, this design does not meet the minimum clearance between the fender arch wheel to the outer most wheel. So, this is fail to the European standard.
