Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Title :
Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.
Objective :
In this challenge we have to calculate gap between fender and the wheel arch of a car at required points so that the car passes European standard.
Tool used :
Datum plane
Sketch tools
Measure tool
Description : Fender
- Fender is the US english term given to the vehicle body that frames the wheel well
- Its purpose is to prevent sand, mud, liquid and other spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
- When vehicle is moving tires tend to pick up small stones and hurl them in all direction. Fenders are basically present to prevent any injuries to the pedestrians and contain the motion of these particles.

We have three different regulations as per market which we can follow, Japan, European and American standards.
Japan Regulations :
- Measure clearance L of a tire, hub , cap and fender in three different position within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
- Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all three positions.
- wheel guard requirement : The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

American standards :
- make clearance check details at all positions from -100 to 100 and make the clearance check table.
- All values must be greater than 5mm to satisfy regulations.
- The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

European Regulations Requirements :
- measure CL L at SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE and produce check chart to validate.
- At all 5 sections the CL Lvalue must be greater than 10 mm to satisfy European regulations.
- wheel guard requirement : The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

Out of these, we mostly follow European standrads as it satisfy all three conditions what we saw above.
Steps followed to check the given wheel arch as per European standards :
- First a datum plane is defined at the outer most part of the wheel.
- Now iwth the help of sketch a 90 degree line is drawn SA, then 30 degree line SB, 50 degree SC.
- Then a point is defined from the horizontal line to the arch of the fender which is 150 mm from the line.
- Now taking the point a line is drawn SE and again a intersecting line is drawn between 50 degree line and the SE which is SD.
- Now outer curve of the fender is projected and intersect point are marked on the all 5 lines.
- Now again upper curve of the tire is projected and intersect point is marked on the line 30 degree forward and 50 degrees rearward and it is named SB-X' and SC-Y', to check 'a' value.
- Now finally we measure the distance between the points SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE and Also SB-X and SC-Y.

| Points | value ( MM) | regulation requir(MM) | status |
| SA-SA | 9.949 | 9.949<10 | fail |
| SB-SB | 10 | =10 | pass |
| SC-SC | 0.113 | 0.113<10 | fail |
| SD-SD | 2.88 | 2.88<10 | fail |
| SE-SE | 5.99 | 5.99<10 | fail |
A value should be greater than 5mm as per European standards.

| points | value mm | result |
| X | 44.75>5 | pass |
| Y | 38.35>5 | pass |
Conclusion:
So the concusion what we can draw for the above fender wheel arch challenge is that this model is not satisfying European regulations at all the five points but only clearing the wheel guard clearence requirement, so for this reason the model fails.
