Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Wheel Arch Area:

  • The Wheel Arch area of the Fender is usually designed for the purpose of protecting the BIW from stones and other objects on the road as well as the Pedestrians.
  • To check the clearance between the Fender and the Wheel, there are certain standards all over the world, They are
  • American Standard
  • European Standard
  • Japanese Standard

In this Challenge, we are going to check the Wheel arch clearance based on the Europen Standards.

The Standards commonly used are,

  • The Standard that we are using here is European Standard,
  • The main objective of this Standard is that the outer edge of the fender and wheel should have a clearance between them, For Europeans, the Clearance should be greater than 10mm.

Procedure:

  • Create the datum plane on the outer edge of the wheel.
  • Create the centre axis.
  • Create the sections SB,SA,SC,SD,SE.
  • Create the section SB by creating an inclined line of 30° to the centre axis i.e SA
  • Create Section SC by creating an inclined line of 50° to the centre axis.
  • Section SE is created by placing the line on the fender at a distance of 150mm.
  • Section SD is created by placing on the centre between the SC and SE.

US REGULATION STANDARD:

The value will be more than 5mm at line 30deg forward and 50 deg backward from the central vertical axis.

Objectives of the wheel arc challenge:

Its main objective is to calculate the area of the wheel arc and check whether the given fender of car will pass the European standards or not.

Conclusion:

The negative sign indicates that the wheel lies behind the fender and does not pass the European standard. To pass that there should be a change in the styling team
