Fender Design Challenge
Objective : To design the Drip area , A pilla region , Bumper mount region and Sill area on fender.
Software Used : CATIA V5
Introduction :
Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface. When vehicle is moving tyres picksup stones and others and hurl them in all direction.Fenders are basically present to prevent injuries to pedestrians and contain motion of these particles.

Mountings : Generally there are 5 mountings on the fender. These are joined by means of fasteners. They are
- Body mounting
- A pillar mounting
- Sill mounting
- Cowl mounting
- Drip area

Work benches used: Generative shape design and Part design
Basic Commands used:
- Split
- Trim
- Boundary
- Connect curves
- Projecting on the surface
- Sketching on the surface by creating planes
- Extract
- Extrapolate
- Sweep with draft direction
- Surface Offset
- Join with sub elements to remove
- Shape fillet and
- Edge fillets.
1.Drip area :
- This is the joining between the fender to the engine compartment. There are lot of design considerations for designing the fender drip area. This region is mounted below the hood inner panel which needs to be in flush when the hood is in closed condition and also there should be very less gaps. The drip area is either spot welded or in some cases bolted down via self-tapping screws.
Design of Drip area :
- A mastersection has been followed for designing the drip area mounting on the fender .The Mastersection followed shown below.

Fig. MAstersection of drip area
- The above mastersection provides the angular and distance measurements for designing the drip area after taking lots of considerations .
- Embossings are provided on the mounting to give strength to the area. A hole is provided for the fixing of fasteners.

2.A Pillar Mount :
- Here this region is mounted to the A-pillar frame of the chasis so that it is rigidly attached to the body of the car.

3.Bumper mounting :
- Here is the region bumper mounting area which is mounted on car bumper .

4.Flush mount region :

5.Sill mounting : It is region where the fender is nounted on the sill area of the car.

Conclusion : By using styling class A as input ,designed Drip mounting ,A pillar mounting, Bumper mounting, baffle region and Sill region . According to the mastersection the drip area designed and remaining areas are designed accoding to the inductry standards .
