Fender Design from Skin Data Using NX CAD

Objective: To design and model of front fender of a car with drip area, A-pillar Mounting and bumper attachment using fender skin in NX CAD.

Introduction: -

Fender is a part of an automobile, cycle or any other vehicle Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle. In additional to fender other components like inner mount, side, and cowl mounts which are fastened with the help of well nuts. They provide sufficient protection to the engine room components and suspension etc., Thus, fender stops all the debris from the road throwing into the air. In addition to the fender, Fender skirts are provided in order to provide better protection.

There are Two types of Fenders:

1.Full Bumper type

2.Half Bumper type

FULL BUMPER TYPE: Full bumper fender is not used nowadays because they required bigger size blank to produce the part & waste material is also there while manufacturing.

HALF BUMPER TYPE: Half bumper fender is used because the waste of material is less & can produce two fenders at the same time by slightly increase the raw sheet. and to reduce the weight & cost mostly bumper fender are been produced.

So, designing a fender includes designing several mounting areas for it to be assembled in the car body.

There are 5 mounting area in a fender:
1. Drip area.
2. Sill Mounting.
3. Bumper mounting.
4. A-pillar mounting.
5. Splash cover mounting.

1.DRIP AREA

It is the area which the fender is to be attached to engine housing through bolts. There are some standards to design the drip area, from the backside of the fender there should be 200mm clearance for cowl mounting and from the front the side the clearance should be 150mm for the head lamp. With the help of the given design data we have to design emboss, holes to attach the fender to housing & some stiffeners to provide strength to the drip area.

2.Sill mount area

An automotive vehicle is necessarily provided with wide openings for accommodating doors at both sides of its body. Since the vehicle body suffers from various kinds of externally derived forces such as vertical bends and longitudinal twists which act around the axis of the vehicle body, a prerequisite is that those portions of the vehicle body which surround the door openings, especially the lower portions, be provided with sufficient rigidity. This prerequisite is generally met by using side sills which are individually located at a lower right and a lower left portion of a vehicle body in such a manner as to extend in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle body. The side sills which serve as reinforcing members for insuring the rigidity of the vehicle body around the door openings.

3.Bumper mount area

A bumper is a structure attached to or integrated with the front and rear ends of an automobile, to absorb impact in a minor collision, ideally minimizing repair costs. So, the bumper mounting area involves in the remaining part of the fender that cover the splash region in that of a half fender type. Bumpers are increasingly being designed to mitigate injury to pedestrians struck by cars, such as through the use of bumper covers made of flexible materials. Front bumpers, especially, have been lowered and made of softer materials, such as foams and crushable plastics, to reduce the severity of impact on legs.

4.A-pillar mounting area

Pillars are vertical supports on a vehicle. They are located around all the glass on an automobile. They are important for holding glass in place and adding structural integrity to a vehicle, primarily the roof. The "A" pillar holds the windshield in place. "B" pillars start at the end of the first door. They usually offer substantial structural support for a vehicle's roof. Most of the time they are bound to the body frame and wrap all the way into the roof. Depending on the design, there may be multiple pieces attached to increase the integrity of the roof. They are also responsible for where a door's latch connects to the body. "C" pillars hold a vehicle's rear window in place.

5.Splash Mounting area

In order to stop all the debris entering into the engine room and other components like suspension joints etc., splash protector mounting part is being placed. The splash mounting area requires just to hold the splash protector mounting the slots/holes are being provided in the design. For some automobiles, additional to the fender, fender skirts and guards are placed in order to provide better protection. The design is not much involved  in splash mounting . Just to provide slots for the fasteners in place.
