Fender Design Challenge

Automobile Front fender Design using NX :

Objectiveu:

To design various mounting points on the fender, according to the design parameter

Fender: Fender is the part of an automobile or other vehicle body that frames a wheel ,also it purpose is to prevent rocks, mud, sand, liquids from being thrown into the air or on to the pedestrians by a rotating wheel. Fender is made aerodynamic in shape to reduce the air drag.

Master section Design Procedure:

Design a front fender from the given skin data and the master section provided with drip mounting, A pillar, Sill, Bumper, Body, Splash mountings.

Master section Design Considerartion and requirements:

The most important function is to consideration in design of fender is drip area in which we have to maintain certain gap at front and rear ends of the fender due to.

At the rear end of the fender we will have to mount the cowl part so for the mounting of cowl part we should have the sufficient clearance of 200mm from the rear end of fender. At the front end of the fender thera is going to be an head lamp, to mount headlamp and its housing, need atleast 150mm clearance from the front end of the fender.

Mounting points on a fender:

Front fender comprises of 6 major design requirements, they are

• Drip Area

• Bumper Mounting

• Sill Mounting

• A-Pillar Mounting

• Baffle Mounting

• Body Mounting

• A-Pillar Mounting:

A-Pillar is the foremost pillar of the carthe, one that holds the windscreen.. It is located at the top right corner of the fender. This mounting is covered with the side rear-view mirror.

• Sill Mounting:

Sill area is the lower area of a fender, the sill mounted on fender and the body of the car.

• Bumper Mounting:

It is the front portion of the fender , where The fender gets attached before the installation of the bumper. this portion and in that region a rib also used to strength the region.

• Drip Area:

The area at which the fender gets attached to the engine housing through fasteners.

A Minimum gap of 200 mm should be maintained from rear end of the fender. This is because to have spacing for cowl mounting.

Also clearance of 150mm from the front of the fender for a headlamp housing unit.

Dart are provided to improve the stiffness and holes are given for mountings over engine compartment.

• Baffle Mounting:

It is the wheel arc area where we will have the mounting a palstic part which is called Baffle.

• Body Mounting:

For stable position of fender it is mounted with the car body.Fasteners can be used for assembly of fender with car body. Here the beads also are provided to improve the stiffness.
