Fender Design Challenge
FENDER DESIGN
Objective:
The main objective of this project is to design a fender using a new age design software-NX CAD.
Modelling of various mounting points on the fender:-
- Design Drip Area
- Design Sill Mount Area
- Design Body Mount Area
- Design Bumper Mount Region
- A-pillar mount Region.
Introduction:
Fender
Fender's purpose is to prevent rocks, mud, sand, liquids from being thrown into the air or on to the pedestrians by a rotating wheel. Fender is made aerodynamic in shape to reduce the air drag.
USES OF FENDER :
- Get other vehicles or pedestrians on the road side dirty
- Hurt pedestrians
- Scratch the bodies of other vehicles
- Cause minor, and even major damage to other vehicles
There are two types of of fenders:-
1. Half bumper type
They are mostly preferred in modern design of automobiles. It is observed that one full bumper type is equal to two half bumper type fender in terms of material consumption and blank size. This gives half bumper type fender advantage about lesser weight with increased performance as well as lower maintenance cost compared to full bumper type fender.

2. Full bumper type
They are used in old design of automobiles. Its production consumes more material compared to Half bumper type which will increase its overall weight with reduced performance as well as more maintenance.

Fender is mounted basically on 5 important regions. They are

- Drip Area
- Bumper Mounting Area
- Sill Mounting Area
- Baffle Mounting Area
- A-Pillar Mounting Area
Drip Area
The area at which the fender gets attached to the engine housing through fasteners. It is the major mounting for the fender.

Mountings at the drip area are designed leaving a clearance of 200mm from the back of the fender for the cowl setup. And clearance of 150mm from the front of the fender for a headlamp housing unit.
Bumper Mounting Area
The bumper mounting region is located beneath the bumper. The fender gets attached before the installation of the bumper. After fixing the fender with fasteners the bumper will cover the bumper mounting.

Sill Mounting Area
The area at which the bottom of the fender gets connected to the floor near the bottom edge of the door. The Embossed sill mounting of the fender is attached with the fasteners.

Baffle Mounting Area
In this region, the baffle gets installed to the fender with the help of clips which holds the baffle with the fender along the wheel arch.

A-Pillar Mounting Area
This Mounting region is located near the cowl of the vehicle where the fender is fastened with the bottom edge of the windshield. This mounting is covered with the side rear-view mirror.
