Fender Design Challenge
Fender Design
Objective:-
Our objective is to design front fender of a car with its mounting using the information provided. The skin data and master section are provided as information.
Fender:-
Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
Types of fenders:-
1) Half fender type
Half fender type is modern design where less material consumption is utilized so that the productivity increases by reducing size of fender and therefore providing more performance. The maintenance is also relatively very low compared to full fender type.

2) Full fender type
Full fender type is a cnventional type of fender where more material consumption is used. This type of fender is used in old design of automobiles where it increases the overall weight and thus reduces the performance of car.

Master Section:-

It comprises of 5 mounting regions on fender
- Drip Mounting Area
- A pillar Mounting
- Bumper Mounting
- Sill Mounting
- Baffle Mounting
Designing the drip mounting area

- It is the pivotal part mounting of the fender.
- This is connected with the engine compartment, therefore the lot of constraints are to be followed while designing the fender.
- It should be 150 mm apart from the edge otherwise it will get disturbed by lamp mountings.
- Darts are added on the longer side of the drip area in order to provide the stiffness and add strength to the part. It plays an essential role by overcoming NVH from outside.
- Embossing are provided on the mounting to strengthen them during fastening.
Designing the A pillar Mounting

- This is a structural pillar that combines the body to the roof.
- It makes the sides of the windshield at rest and front fenders are fastened.
- Embossing are provided on the mounting to strengthen them.
Designing the Bumper Mounting

- Bumper mounting area is to fix the bumper to the fender with the help of the fasteners.
- Embossing are provided on the mounting to strengthen them during fastening.
Designing the Sill Mounting

- Sill is the panel directly beneath the bottom of the door supporting the floor and may be used to integrate the floor and the body.
- The bottom end of the fender is mounted on the sill body for reinforcement of the fender.
Designing the Baffle Mounting:

- Baffle mounting or mudguard are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the tire.
- It protects the car engine compartment and pedestrians from causing injuries from chip out of debris on the road when the car is moving.
- They are mounted on the fender using locking clips.
Conclusion:-
Therefore, Designing the fender is successfully done with the help of NX 12 CAD.
