Fender Design Challenge

Aim- To design the sill mount, Bumper Mount, baffle mount and A-Pillar mount for the given fender skin model.

Introduction

Fender is the the part of an automobile that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

The fender not only protects your car from sustaining damage from road debris, but it prevents this debris from being thrown up at other vehicles, pedestrians on the road. Therefore, vehicles with large, oversized tires are often required by law to install fender flares.

Types of fenders

Using a single blank of sheet metal only one full bumper type can be produced where two half bumper type can be produced using single blank of sheet metal and there is less scrap and most used are half bumper type and is cheaper in price compared to full bumper type.

Procedure for designing

A) The skin data from the styling team is received.

B)Following the master section as shown below the mountings are designed.

Master section considered for the design

1) Drip mount area- it is one of the main mountings, it is connected to the engine compartment.

  • 300mm or less space must be left free for the cowl top.
  • 150mm space must be free from the front for the headlamp mounting
  • Embossing is provided for the bolt to accommodate.
  • Dart is provided for the stiffness
  • Drip mount should be 10mm or over away from the engine room
  • Rib is provided to prevent the viberation and provide strength

2)A-pillar mount area

A-pillar is the roof support structure on either side of a vehicle's windshield. A-pillar mounting designed in the fender is used to fasten the A-pillar.

3)Baffle mount area

To prevent the debris, liquid from entering the engine room baffles/splash is used. To accommodate them holes or slots are provided to the fender arc region.

4)Bumper mount area

This mounting is used to fasten the bumper to the fender.

5)Sill mount area

The rocker panel, or sill, is the part of the car running between the wheel-arches beneath the doors. The bottom end of the fender is connected to the sill by the means of sill mount area.

C) Finally, after thickening check for the sharp corners and blend them.

Conclusion

The fender with required mountings are designed using Siemens NX
