Automotive Fender Design (BIW Design using NX)

FENDER DESIGN

Objective:-

  • Design Drip Region
  • Design Sill Mount Region
  • Design Bumper Mount Region
  • Design A Pillar Mount Region
  • Design splash cover Mount Region

What is Fender?

  • Front Fender is the Side covering for the Engine Compartment and it also frames the Front Wheels of the Car.
  • The major function of Front fender is to avoid chipping inside the Engine compartment that is to prevent sand, mud, rocks and liquids from being thrown into the air by rotating tyres.
  • Fenders prevent the small stones from hitting the pedestrians as well as to other components of the Car.
  • In the above image, front fender is shown in red Colour.

Types of Fender:-

In the above image, we can see two types of fender. First one is full bumper type and the one on the right is half bumper type. We in our design are using Half Bumper Type. Now a days half bumper type is used in almost all automobiles due to some advantages over full bumper type fender. The blank sheet are used for drawing one full bumper type fender, this same size of sheet can be used to draw two half bumper type fenders. Also, now a days we incorporate plastic for the front bumper portion of the Car which saves material cost as well as manufacturing cost.

Given design data for Fender:-

The set of images shown above provide the reference dimensioning and approximate ranges to create all the necessary mountings for Fender.

Design Outputs with Design Considerations for mountings:-

Drip Area Design:-

Drip area joins to the Engine Compartment and is the uppermost mounting of the fender. While designing the Drip area, first thing we have to consider is gap from rear section of the fender. The gap from rear end is generally given at least 200 mm to leave proper space for Cowl region. Similarly, at least 150 mm gap is provided from to front to incorporate proper spacing for headlamp housing up front. So, we don't have any predefined length for the drip region, it is calculated on the basis of front and rear clearance. Also from the drip region to the uppermost part of fender, we maintain an angle of 3 degrees. We do this to ensure non visibility of Engine Compartment if someone looks from outside. Above images show the design for mouting of Drip ara.

Splash Cover Mount Design:-

At the wheel arch area, mountings are provided for splash covering. Wheel arch area can be decided based on the standards for that particular region. After designing the wheel arch area, there is not much design consideration in the placement for splash cover mountings. These mountings shown above are simple in design which have holes for screws, they hold up up the splash cover in place. Three such mountings can be seen in the above images for this fender.

A Pillar Mount Region:-

A pillar mounting is provided at the rear end of the fender. With this, the fender is mounted on the A pillar of the Car. We can see it's design in the above images.

Sill Mount Design:-

Sill mount is located at the bottommost part of the fender. It is provided to attach the fender to the Sill of the Car. The design is shown in the above images.

Bumper Mount Design:-

Bumper Mount is located at the front of the fender. This mounting ensures the attachment of the fender to the bumper of the Car. Bumper mount design is shown in the above images.
