Challenge

Fender Design

AIM:The main objective of this challenge is to design a front fender of a car using the given master section and explain about fender and its design parameters.

INTRODUCTION:

Fender is American English  term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

FENDER:

A fender is a part of an automobile that frames a wheel well (Fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road sprays from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire and also prevent injuries for pedestrians by the rotating wheel are the main purpose served by the fenders.

Need of car fender:

Fender is a sheet of metal covering the wheel well of your car and it provide resistance against wind and other roadside debris.Rough road condition creates minor scratches and dents, Frequent road bumps can cause your cars paint to chip off which needs a paint job done.so fender act as a protective feature in those condition.

Types of Fenders:

There are two types of fenders.

  • Full Bumper Type:

It is the oldest method using the fender design, This type of bumper is not commonly used because It increases the weight producing  more scrap  during manufacturing. This type is not sufficient economically due to high wastage.

  • Half Bumper type:

This types of fenders  most commonly used. It reduces the weight of vehicle and  decrease material scrap. They can be economically manufactured, i.e by slightly increasing the blank size, we can produce two fenders at a time.

FENDER MOUNTINGS:

  • A-PILLAR MOUNTING
  • BODY MOUNTING
  • SILL MOUNTING
  • BUMPER MOUNTING
  • DRIP AREA MOUNTING

Drip Area:

It is the critical mounting area located inside the engine component. Designed according to the master section provided and
optimal opening angle is maintained to make it look well assembled from outside.

A-pillar Mounting:

It is located at the top area of the fender used to be mounted with the top hoop area.

Bumper mounting Area:

In half bumper fenders the bumper is connected with the bumper mounting area of the fender.

Sill Area:

It is located at the bottom area of the fender.

Baffle mounting:

It is located at the wheel arch of the fender.

DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING PROCESS USING NX CAD:

  • Drip Area:

Drip area mounting It is connected with the engine compartment,While designing the drip we have to initially leave 200-300 mm for cowl top and placing the headlamp we have to leave at least 150 mm at the front while designing the fender.

  • A-pillar Design:

A-pillar area is located at the top part of the fender. We have to make an approximate flat surface for placing the mounting holes.Ribs or darts should be designed as to make the A-pillar section more attached to the surfaces it is placed.

  • Sill Mounting:

Sill mounting is created on the bottom portion of the fender for attaching to the sill.

  • Bumper Mounting:

This mounting point is created for attaching the bumper to the fender. It should have enough strength to hold the bumper steadily. The chances of vibrations on this area is analysed and is provided ribs for compact.

  • Baffle Mounting:

These mounting points are created for attaching plastic components. It is used to protect the vehicle from dust particles and it is also used to protect the pederstians from causing from the chips out debris of the car when in motion.

CONCLUSION:

Thust the front fender is designed with the help of NX CAD software according to the given master section.
